Maybe I asked the wrong question: Are there plans to have an existing APFS volume be converted to an APFS mirror? Any rough ETA if yes?

OK, so how would I set up an APFS mirror Raid 1? Format all drives APFS, and then create the mirror?

You're right, although it says unmounted, TM is happy. I'm not as I still can't see how to add a 2nd disk to it to make it RAID 1.
