I recently, finally, upgraded my house backup server to Catalina as I needed that to run some other things. I also had to upgrade my softraid version to 6.3 and disable secure boot but I believe that is all working now. At least it appears to be working normally locally. In the sharing control panel I can select the raid volume or folders on the raid volume and they appear to share from there. I have selected to share only via SMB as was suggested in the known issues. Other computers on the network running a variety of OS versions can see the computer has shares and you can select the raid share, but as soon as it attempts to mount I get the “The operation can’t be completed because the original “foldername” cannot be found” error and then nothing. I have rebooted all the machines on both sides, done the dance with force quitting the finder, removed everything from the sharing panel, rebooted the server and re-added it. The server will happily share it’s internal volume and those mount just fine too.

The raid volume is formatted as HFS+ and not APFS. The option to “Convert Volume” in the sofraid app is greyed out when it is selected. I’m not sure this even is for that but I would convert the volume if possible in order to get it to share if that is what the problem is.

The only other oddness I’ve noticed is that the raid volume does not display in the lefthand list of “Locations” in Finder windows. To get to it I have to click on the computer name icon and then it is shown as a volume there.

The server is a 2018 Mac Mini running 10.15.7 and softraid v 6.3 and softraid driver v 6.3. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Dear all,

I have a Mac-Mini 2012 with two x 2TB SSD

I would like to merge both SSDs into RAID1

I know that under RAID0 it is not possible to install Catalina on the startup disk

However I seem to have read somewhere that Catalina can be installed on a RAID1

If so how would I go doing that since in order to configure the Mac mini to a RAID1 with SoftRaid there must be Catalina already installed. But then when I try using SoftRaid to create the RAID1 SoftRaid tells me that I need to initialise the drives first which means that the SSDs would be formatted. Which to me sounds like an impossible task because if I initialise the SSDs I loose everything installed on those two SSDs. It is not the data that is an issue since I have a backup however it seems to me that although I understand that we cannot install macOS Catalina on the startup disk using RAID0 how can I achieve that if all I want is to set up a RAID1 with Catalina installed on the Mac mini.

I thought of cloning the primary SSD that is the start up disk with all my software, then I would have formatted both SSDs and then installed macOS Catalina and Softraid to create the RAID1 with SoftRaid. But again I am finding myself with the same issue that is that both SSDs need to be initialise first before creating a new volume.

Please if you can help I will be very grateful,

Many thanks and KR

I've got a cMP 2010 w/ 2 x 4TB & 2 x 6TB HDs in the trays. Booting is from a Samsung SSD on a PCIe Card

Now, the two 6TB HDs are presently in AppleRAID-1. When I installed SoftRAID 5.8.4, the read/write speed to this AppleRAID fell to about 10 % of what it was beforehand. Removing the SoftRAID driver resolved the issue. Not using AppleRAID-1 isn't an option for me, as I need several of the features in APFS.

My idea was installing the two 4TB HDs in the DVD bays, buying 2 x 6TB HDs more, and formatting the resulting 4 x 6TB HDs in SoftRAID-5; but with this issue rearing it's ugly head, I've decided to go with OpenZFS instead. (& - yes - I've bought a license for SoftRAID)

Conclusion : SoftRAID is incompatible w/ AppleRAID-1.
