How to set Startup System Security to none with Catalina

I seem to be having an issue disabling secure boot. I log in to recovery, with no issue. But, when I try to access the utility, my password is declined. I've tried the password multiple times. I've even reinstalled the OS. I'm on Catalina. The only thing unique about my setup is that I use a thunderbolt SSD drive as my boot drive as my internal Mac mini drive is just too small. Any ideas?

Your normal admin password? Are you using a wireless keyboard? Is it using the same admin account you have a password for?

I don’t want to disable the Startup System Security, so I don't want to update from version 5.8.1 jet. Is it possible to turn off this annoying update reminder?

@uhlhorn

You are misunderstanding what is happening. You must disable Secure Boot in Catalina. What happens otherwise is the limited 5.6.9 driver loads, which cannot rebuild or report errors.

You can prove it to yourself with this terminal command, paste this in:

sudo kextstat -b com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID

It will show 5.6.9 is loading.

You should run 5.8.4, the last version for Catalina.

If you think you are disabling all security you are not, Secure Boot only runs for about 30 seconds, you are not disabling all security, just forcing the default drivers in mac OS to load, so if any of them are updated (like SoftRAID), then the older version will load.

I only need to turn off Secure Boot for the installation and then I can turn it back on? Or does it have to stay off?

@uhlhorn

It needs to stay disabled until you upgrade to Big Sur.

This is a Catalina limitation.

Okan, I was able to work without this update reminder for a long time. And I would like to have that back. How can I turn off this reminder? The reminder pops up every hour, which is very annoying.

@uhlhorn

What if in SoftRAID prefererences you set "check for updates" to never?

I have set it to "never", but the program still asks me every hour. Whereas – today I restarted my computer and still had no update reminder. Maybe that was just a bug.

@uhlhorn

Its possible the Monitor is crashing, or the setting was not holding. Let me know if this continues.

It continues. Today I got again the Reminder. The „search for new version“ is off, but the update reminder pops up.

@uhlhorn

Is there a reason you are not updating to 5.8.4?

I do not know why you are getting the update notice. You can try changing the setting, restarting, then set to Never again.

Yes, I don’t want to deactivate save boot. Actual I only need SoftRAID for certifying new hard drives.

Now it is gone. Even the icon in the menu bar is gone. So it’s like before. I don’t know what exactly caused it.

@uhlhorn

Paste this command into terminal.app:

sudo kextstat -b com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID

Lets see what comes out.
