What you do is install, set up the volume, update to 10.13.6, then clone it to the SoftRAID volume. Note that "security updates" are no longer installable either, so you need to keep an updated CCC clone of your volume, then apply security updates, then clone back.

With Mojave and forward, you cannot boot from SoftRAID RAID volumes at all. This was an internal decision by Apple, which does not appear will be reversed any time soon.

Hello,

I'm new to SoftRAID, but a long-time user of AppleRAID. I've got several mac minis (Macmini6,2)*2 (Macmini5,3)*2, (Macmini5,1)*1. I've been running on macOS Sierra for a while, since High Sierra stopped supporting AppleRAID. So, as a test, I've just converted the AppleRAID on a Macmini6,2 to a SoftRAID and have tried to upgrade to macOS Catalina ... (I hope I can go direct?). I don't want to get too far behind the macOS development curve, so I'm excited to jump into SoftRAID.

Trying to upgrade, I received and error "You may not install to this volume because it is part of a SoftRAID". So, so searching and I found and read this article:
http://downloads.owc.com/softraid/mac/SoftRAID%20Installation%20with%20Catalina.pdf

It does not appear that I have a "T2" chip, but I tried to edit the "Startup Security Utility" anyway, using recovery mode, as well as bootable macOS Sierra USB. In both cases I see a "Firmware Security Utility" instead, and I can only set a firmware password, not disable startup security. I tried to "disable safeguard" within SoftRAID, but this did not work either.

I began to read 5 pages of the posts on this forum about the initial troubles in upgrading to High Sierra, ... ! ... and decided to post a new thread.

Any advice?

Akechi Clark
