I am running an OWC Thunderbay with 4 bays. I had 12, 12, 8 and 5 and recently replaced the 5 with another 12TB drive. After replacing the drive and certifying the new drive, everything is up and running. The problem is that when I go to re-size the volume, I get the message that there has been an internal error and to restart the app. I did this whole thing because I was down to 1TB free and if I can re-size it then I can solve that problem. I am running a Mac with Sonoma 14.4.1 and SoftRaid 8.0 and drive 8.0. Can anyone help me? I have restarted and I am not sure what else I can do. When I go to re-size it says that the max is 24TB. When I chose 24, it says it will take up to 60 seconds and then fails, giving me the error message again.

It was intended to be a 4 from the start, but one disk was bad and had to be sent back for warranty replacement which took a long time. I needed to build it as a 3 disk RAID to make sure the software was working (I was having problems getting it to work).

To change the size, I followed the instructions here: https://softraid.com/faq/can-i-add-a-disk-to-my-raid-4-5-softraid-array/ and disabled safeguard and attempted to delete the volume, following these instructions: https://softraid.com/faq/how-do-i-change-my-raid-volume-to-a-different-raid-level/

When I do that, I get an error that says “An internal part of the SoftRAID application has stopped functioning properly. Please quit SoftRAID and relaunch it.” I have quit and relaunched SoftRAID four times, and get the same error. The volume continues to function properly.

I have linked screenshots and a support report in this dropbox folder: . I am using SR 7.5 on M1 MacBook Pro running OS 13.3.1.

I will first pull all 4 of the disks from the Thunderbay 4 and certify the 4 new ones. Then will replace the 3 RAID 5 disks with the new certified disks. At this point I am at a loss as to how to convert to 1+0 as well as making the size to take up only the 1st 40% of the new disks. Current 3 - 4tb disks will replace with 4 - 14tb disks

hope this makes sense and thank you

First of all: is that possible at all (the volume is RAID5)?

Next: Is this path doable:

- shrink the HFS+ volume (less then half of the volume is used)

- create a new (encrypted) APFS volume on the open space

- copy data from HFS+ volume to the APFS volume

- erase HFS+ volume to allow for more space for the APFS to grow.

(sorry. I am no file system expert)

I have a mini Thunderbay 4 - 4x 500GB drives that I set up as a 1+0. I tried this as one of the drives is a bit iffy (comes up with will 'die soon') messages but wasn't ready to chuck it out just yet. So I put the good drives as the primary pair and included the 'bad' drive in the mirror. The rationale being that I just replace that bad drive when it did die without compromising the data on the primary pair. So it happened yesterday - the array could not be mounted, so I went to replace the bad drive and add in a new one. However when rebuilding the offsets ran into the hundreds of millions and still at the end, it 'failed' - the process just halted and I couldn't mount the volume. I tried again with another good drive but same again. I thought that I might even mount the two good drives as a volume by themselves but there's no option that I can see.

The data on the volume isn't crucial, it was meant to be a 'scratch' volume of sorts, that's why I chose this method. However I thought I still had a level of convenience built in (see above). I'll just wipe and recertify the drives and build another volume, but I was wondering what causes what I thought was a fairly robust setup to not be able to rebuild/ mount when given a new drive please?

I wanted to split the volume into two parts so that I could use one part for backup and another part for temporary storage of some files. I saw that in the menus of the program you can only use the "resize". There is no "split" function. But what happens if the "resize" function? Does it split the hard disk into two parts? Or does it only reduce the size of the whole disk? Thank you very much.
