Creating SoftRAID 1 from volumes with identical data

I'm looking for a workaround for the problem that SoftRAID cannot convert 2 AppleRAID sets that are composed of multiple partitions on each of 2 disks.

I have two external HDs with two identical partitions on each disk — i.e., partition 1 on disk 1 is 2.5 GB and identical to partition 1 on disk 2, and the same for the 1.5GB partition 2 on each disk.

The identical partitions are now in Apple RAID 1. (One mirrored pair is used for Time Machine and the other, for data.) I know that I cannot simply convert these two RAID sets with SoftRAID.

However, if I DELETE each RAID 1 array in AppleRAID, the partitions will still remain with identical data on each.

May I then create two SoftRAID mirrored arrays from those slices that were formerly AppleRAID 1 mirrors. Or is it the case that before creating a SoftRAID 1 set, the partitions must be erased so that they have no data on them?

Let me try something here and let you know. I have an idea for a workaround. It may be a couple hour before I can reply however.
