OWC Thunderbolt 2 Thunderbaw Read Errors on Samsung 4T drive
I have been using the OWC Thunderbay Thunderbolt 2 unit with 4 2T Samsung drives for some time. I replaced these with 4 4T samsung drives and got read errors on two of the four, in that they would not format. I pulled these two drives and hooked them to a laptop with a SATA -> USBC connector individual and was able to format each with no read errors. I reinstalled them on the thunder bay and one of those two drives formatted correctely, the other continued to give input / output errors. I don't understand why I get softraid errors on the OWC, but not on the SATA/USB on the laptop with the same drives.
When you initialize a drive with SoftRAID, the application performs a 10 second read/write test to the disk, to make sure it is usable. The disk is failing this test it appears.
Check with Samsung that your blades are Mac compatible.
Did you certify the disks? that is worth doing, it does not take so long on flash media. That checks to ensure the blade is reliable.
@softraid-support The disk repeatedly fails initialization by soft raid on the Thunderbay equipped desktop Mac. It works fine on a Mac book pro with a soft raid using a SATA/usb connector. I just wondered if there was a memory of something in the desktop from a previous read error or if it was failing again only on that unit. It also fails the soft raid certification, but only on the OWC thunder bay.
Send me a SoftRAID support file from the system where it failed certify. An SSD/blade should not fail certify, ever.
Is the Thunderbay a TB3 (USB C connector), or a TB2 (Thunderbay 2 connector)?
How are you connecting on the other? A simple adapter? or an enclosure?
If anything was failing, I would expect the reverse. This could point to a problem in the Thunderbay, perhaps. its either that, or the drive cannot handle very fast IO for some reason.
Also, what if you move it to a different slot? Same thing?
@softraid-support It is Thunderbolt 2. The disk did work in a different slot, so it seems there is some issue with the Thunderbay, although it worked fine with other drives previously. I swapped the A&B drives and mot the B drive in slot 1 reports errors and continues to report errors when I move it back to slot 2 where it reported no errors before.
If the problem stays with a specific slot, then it is an enclosure issue. You can contact macSales Customer service, (via phone or web form/ email) and explain your troubleshooting, then get this fixed (or replaced)
