I'm running Big Sur on Intel and have experienced the same problems as mentioned above. I've worked through all the resolutions, and none work. The only way I can get my drive to mount is through the Teminal command `sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext` after booting.

I worked with OWC support on this issue on my iMac Pro with a thunderblade.  We repeated these steps (many times) and still no success.  I am posting this so everyone is aware this is not just an M1 issue, but came up in my case for 11.4. I think anyone using SoftRaid should be told so as not to waist their own time or support.

I have recovered the data I need and, as someone posted in another thread, I will just start getting large, 4TB and larger SSDs from now on.

The mounting problem is not M1, it is Big Sur not reliably mounting volumes. We are working with Apple on a solution or fix, hopefully it will come in a future mac OS release, I am not sure we can work around it, as Big Sur needs to be able to load drivers in a consistent way.

I appreciate the comment. I was just making sure.  I understand that there really is nothing you can do about this. The concern long term is that this could happen again.  I might call support about mounting each disk in the Thunderblade as a separate disk if I can. This would be a permanent solution to the RAID problem for me.  At least that way I would not through out 4 TB of perfectly good SSD storage. I don't see why this would not work.

If you want to run in individual disk mode it is easy. zero disk, 100 sectors. then use Disk Utility to erase each disk.

The final changes to "Driver kit" in 12.0 or the next OS should stabilize things, the security changes in macOS go fast and things like third party drivers are second thought.

@softraid-support Thanks for the information.  I am not sure what you mean by "zero disk, 100 sectors" before using disk utility.  I assumed I would erase and name each disk in the utility.  Is there a page somewhere with detailed instructions?

I also don't know what "12.0" is in reference to. Do you mean OSX 12?  That is likely many month away so perhaps my solution to use the disks individually is the best choice.  Once things are stabilized, I assume I can use disk utility or your utility to create a RAID again.

Thanks so much for the help.

@jons

Disk Utility has a bug since 10.9 where it cannot initialize a SoftRAID disk, so use SoftRAID to zero it first.

We expect macOS 12 or (yuch) 13 to finally stabilize drivers, but we can hope!

Its too early to know if Monterey will solve the driver loading problem.

Why did the not mounting the volume only appear with SoftRAID 6.05? I didn't have any of these issues with earlier SoftRAID 6.0X versions.

Shouldn't that be a hint at the root cause?

@gvansteelant

Its a Big Sur bug primarily. I have seen it with 6.0.3 also. (Most users are upgraded)

We think this will be fixed in a future macOS release, but have no idea which one. We are also looking at any workarounds we can find in the interum.

Any updates on this driver installation issue? I just upgraded to 6.05 tonight and really wish there had been an advisory not to when I discovered this thread. I'm running Big Sur 11.4 with a 6 disk Thunderbay connected to an (Intel) iMac 20,2.

The driver doesn't load, I did approve it. I have since uninstalled SoftRAID and reinstalled including driver approval and also tried the full disk access change suggested in the PDF at the head of this thread. Nothing seems to make a difference, the driver won't load automatically.

I can load it using 'sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext' and everything seems OK. If necessary I can run that every time I reboot but I'm hoping there is a more permanent fix that is ideally not dependent on Apple.

@stepheng

This was acknowledged to be a macOS bug and it should be fixed in either 10.12 or a future version of macOS. I do not know of an easy fix yet, nothing reliable.

Note:
The "up" key in terminal will show prior commands, so next time you want to manually load SoftRAID, just hit the up arrow and this command will be available without having to type it.

What is strange is some users say it happens suddenly, with a previously working system. Or, it goes away for some. It does not seem to be consistent.

@softraid-support

I have the same issue as ncrodjones

My main drive died 3 weeks ago. I reinstall the last Time-backup I had but the version of SoftRAID was the 6.01 (and it is expired).

Trying too all the steps of  ncrodjones: notting ! Now my "myraid5" not anymore appearing by Finder as well as the 4 drives of "Myraid5".

On BigSur11.4/ The 6.0.5.app ask to install, OWC allowed, always the same end: Initialization Failed (command ID=30, InitializationState=14, result = 102).

Since I cannot enter a valid serial/number or no options are in black (all are in grey),

can you tell me how I can "run SOFTRAID and unsinstall" it ?

Thanks

@lemj0001

If you paste this into terminal, does your volume mount?

sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext

Nothing since there is no "SoftRAID.kext" in /Library/Extensions/

Even after a clean install of BIG SUR and trying to install SoftRaid 6.0.5

@lemj0001

I need to see a SoftRAID tech support file. Can you attach one?
