6.0.4 RAID won't mount

I have upgraded to v6.0.4 and now my (non startup) RAID-1 APFS volume won't mount - it did before the upgrade.

The GUI shows the disk and volumes with no errors, if I select Mount from the Volume menu the GUI shows the volume as mounting but after a few seconds that message goes away and the volume status remains as unmounted.

Disk Utility shows the disks but not the volume.

I've attached a Tech Support Report.

Help on getting my RAID mounted would be appreciated!

Most likely you did not go to System Preferences and "Allow" OWC as an identified developer. this must be done for every driver update.

The driver is not loading as a result.

Nope, I did that - System Preferences->Security & Privacy have nothing listed as needing action.

@dgiffin

The key to your problem is you did not get "Allow", or apparently the "OK" to reapprove OWC as an identified developer.

macOS requires re-approving all driver every update. If you do not, it will not load.

So lets try this;

Click on your startup volume in SoftRAID

"reinstall SoftRAID driver" from volumes menu.

go to System Preferences before you restart and see if you can either Alllow, or click OK to enable the driver again.

Let me know if you cannot, or no option shows up

Nope :-(

I selected the Startup volume and re-installed the driver but as soon as the driver had reinstalled (before reboot) the RAID mounted on my desktop!

I checked System Preferences/Security & Privacy and there was nothing to Allow or Enable.

I restarted.

The RAID failed to mount after restart, selecting the volume and mounting from the GUI failed (it didn't mount).

@dgiffin

Then try a full "uninstall SoftRAID" from utilities menu. restart and install SoftRAID again. (you need to reenter your license)

I have seen a couple customers report this, not sure the cause yet.

I am having this same exact issue. I have an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Quad configured in Raid 5.  Prior to yesterday  (May 15th 2021) my enclosure worked fine.   Today, I found that my volume has completely disappeared.

Running:

MacOS BigSur 11.3.1 on an 27" iMac 5k Late 2020
3.8Ghz 8 Core Intel Core i7
64GB 2667 MHz DDR4
AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8GB

 - here is what I have tried:

1.) Disconnected all USB devices from my mac (Except kb/mouse).  Uninstalled SoftRaid 6.0.4, then re-installed - SoftRaid 6.0.4.  Clicked "Allow" in the security settings, as well as enabled "Full Disk Access" under security & Privacy - drive shows in SoftRaid (individual disks show in Disk Utility) but my Raid Volume will not mount.

2.) Uninstalled 6.0.4 and re-installed 6.0.3 (clicked allow, and enabled full disk access) - same symptoms as above.

3.) Uninstalled 6.0.3 and performed a reset while holding CMD+Opt+P+R.    Allowed this to cycle twice. Repeated 6.0.4 install from above.   Volume will still not mount.

I have attached the tech support report from SoftRaid.

That fixed it - thanks!

I'm pretty certain that I hit this (or a similar) problem with the last upgrade to 6.0.3 too, I should have remembered the resolution.

If it's any help in tracking down the root cause, the only odd thing in my setup is that my startup disk is an external SSD, but as I said, I'm good now. Thanks for the amazing support :-)

@allenat

I think your issue may be a driver issue.

Try these steps:

Uninstall SoftRAID driver, volumes menu

run the terminal.app and paste in these commands: (one at a time)

sudo rm -r /Library/Extensions/SiLabsUSBDriver64.kext

sudo rm -r /Library/Extensions/ContourShuttle.kext

sudo rm -r /Library/Extensions/Blackmagic_Multibridge_Driver.kext

sudo rm -r /Library/Extensions/BlackmagicUsbIO.kext

sudo kmutil clear-staging
sudo kextcache -i /

Restart, run SoftRAID. You should get the System Preferences dialog box, and then "Allow" OWC as an identified developer.

I am surprised these two Black Magic extensions are not loadable, looks like you recently installed them. Maybe there is an update.

@dgiffin

These are Big Sur issues, we are unsure how to avoid them, but we are considering revamping the driver installation process to detect this better. Big Sur should be able to load extensions, or tell users when extensions are not compatible with Big Sur. (then not block other extensions from loading)

@52bhamp

Can you try a support file from the terminal.app? Maybe there is another issue.

softraidtool generatereport ~/Desktop/52Bhamp.2021.4.17.sr_supt

Paste this into terminal and hit enter. It should succeed in making a support file. Then attach it

Did it create a file on your desktop? if so, it succeeded, you can attach it.

@52bhamp

he SoftRAID user interface updates in real time, so as disks appear, the volume status will update. this is not a bug, it is a feature, else the main window will be blank for long periods waiting for disks to appear.

Hope this stays working!
