Don't worry about backup, I know what RAID is :-) This DAS unit hosts amongst others my photo archive (150000+ images), so everything is backed up daily to a Synology NAS downstairs and from there to an AWS Glacier vault :-)

Yes, you cannot add a disk to a RAID 5 volume to increase capacity. So go ahead with your plan to restore from the original Drobo data.

Keep in mind that RAID is not the same as backup, so make sure you continue to have a backup strategy. (Maybe keep the drobo as a second backup/storage location)

Hi,

I recently bought a Thunderbay 8 and 8 drives to build a new DAS to replace my aging Drobo.

One of the 8 drives was faulty so I returned it and Amazon will send me a remplacement. In the meantime I created a volume with the 7 remaining drives and already moved all my Drobo contents to it.

Today the replacement 8th drive arrived. Installed and initialized it, but it looks like I cannot add it to the existing volume. Is that correct? Is my only option to delete the existing volume and create a new one with the 8 drives?

Luckily I still have the Drobo available but migrating the 11 TB took over 30 hours (I'm on a Late 2015 iMac with Thunderbolt 2)...
