Disk Predicted to Fail Based on SMART Data

So, this message started popping up a couple of SoftRAID versions ago. It's flagging the iMac's internal disk, saying it is likely to fail over the next 2 - 6 months. However, when I check this disk in System Information / SATA, the MacOS reports the SMART status as "verified". I also ran your terminal command "softraidtool disk all getsmartdata" and it reports that SoftRAID cannot check the status of this disk.

SMART data for disk1:

disk1, SN: Z8E0SGRM, SATA bus 0, id 0

Total Bytes: 1.82 TB (2,000,398,934,016)

No SMART attribute data available for this disk.

The error message pops up every 24 hours. Is this a bug?

I am guessing this is a Fusion configuration, where the HDD is starting to fail. We do not correctly get disk data in the user interface from Fusion drives.

If you look in the SoftRAID log, I suspect it has the details about the prediction, such as the number of reallocated sectors. What does it say?

@softraid-support - Here's what the log reports:

Oct 14 15:42:44 - SoftRAID Monitor: The disk at disk1, SATA bus, 1.82 TB is predicted to fail. This disk is 20 - 60 times more likely to fail in the next 2 - 6 months than a normal disk. This prediction is based on SMART data retrieved from the disk. This disk should be replaced soon. SMART Attributes used for failure prediction are: ID 5 (Reallocated SectorCount) = 0, ID 196 (Reallocated Event Count) = 0, ID 197 (Reallocation Pending Sector Count) = 32, ID 198 (Uncorrectable Sector Count) = 32.
Oct 14 15:42:45 - SoftRAID Monitor: Finished SMART test on all disks.

the uncorrectable sectors are the key to this error. This tells you the disk is indeed failing.

If you are brave, you can buy a kit to replace the internal, it is doable, with care. We have instructions on how, as does macfixit.

@softraid-support Thanks for the update. I've replaced hard drives in older iMac (with the magnetically attached screens) but not the newer one. I'll have to take a look at the instructions for doing that.
