Running Catalina 10.15.7, RAID 5 on my OWC Thunderbay 4 was working perfectly via 5.8.4 this morning, then I updated to 6.0.3 and it would not mount. I have uninstalled and reinstalled in 5.8.4, 6.0.1, 6.0.3, and 6.0.5 since then, accepted security preferences over and over again, double checked that full disk access is granted and secure boot is set to 'no security'. Activated and deactivated my license. Volume shows up in all versions of SoftRAID, no errors, but will not mount. Volume > Mount will show that it is mounting for a few seconds, but then returns to 'unmounted'.

Also, the support email form seems to be broken. When I hit 'submit', the page just turns blank white.

Please help! Thanks in advance!

Are you able to save a SoftRAID tech support file and attach it? I can help from there.

What page specifically appears not to work? I had reports of one, but we fixed it.

thanks

@softraid-support see attached.

The page is https://www.softraid.com/support/contacting-tech-support/ - I filled out the email form, but when I clicked "submit", it would return a blank page with no indication that anything was sent.

Thanks so much!

@jgaldern

I will investigate and make sure the page is working.

Your volume directory may be damaged. the volume is mountable, the driver is loading. I suspect the directory is damaged. Do you have access to the application Disk Warrior?

@softraid-support Just purchased Disk Warrior. I've never used it. Can you walk me through what I should do from here?

@jgaldern

It should be straightforward:

run Disk Warrior and enter your license number.

It will scan all your volumes.

In the volume pulldown, it will let you select a volume.

Select your JGA volume.

Click "rebuild" (I think that is what is says, going from memory)

It will start scanning the volume. this can take anywhere from 5 minutes to many hours, depending on whether it finds the main directory, or has to scan for the backup. Yours is a large volume, so expect 30-60 minutes, hopefully not longer.

When it is completed, here is where you have your first decision. Disk Warrior does NOT write to the volume until you click "replace".

Look through the report and see if it seems scary, like damaged files, rescued items, etc.

So before you Replace, click the Preview button. Ignore the window that comes up, and go to the desktop. Open your volume and browse around, try opening a couple files, etc. You can use the DW preview window either to see changes, but I generally just open the pseudo volume.

If you think you are missing a lot of files, or they do not open, or there are tons of "rescued items", then do not replace, unless you are sure the key files you need are available.

Otherwise, click replace, and in probably 10 minutes or so, the volume will be repaired and mount on the desktop.

because Disk Warrior does not write until you click replace, it is always safe to scan your volume directories.

sometimes, it comes back, unable to replace directory, or unable to repair because of a hardware services error, etc. that is your worst case, where it cannot fix your issue. We can deal with that if you get hit with that.

@softraid-support That all worked and the directory was repaired. There were rescued items, and missing files in random places; the numbers might lean on the "scary" side but the important stuff was all there and openable. I have a backup I can use to fill in the gaps. See attached for the report summary. Some follow up questions:

- Does this indicate any hardware issues?
- Is there anything I should do to avoid this in the future?

@jgaldern

This all looks easy for Disk Warrior to replace, you should be good.

I would run DW monthly on all your volumes, this can happen with HFS. The best you can do to avoid this is avoid crashes, dirty shutdowns, etc. and if something does happen, run Disk Warrior and check your volumes. This is a flaw in HFS, which is being replaced by APFS, but unfortunately, APFS is really slow on HDD's so HFS will be around for a while.
