Different or identical hard drives for SoftRAID?

New user question...

Always believed I had to use identical hard drives in my hardware RAID boxes. But for SoftRAID?

I want to set up a RAID 1 or Mirror using a couple of USB drives. I plan on using two 2TB drives. Do I need to buy two of the same make and model or can I / should I buy a couple of different brands to lower the risk if hardware failure - a bad batch for example?

Not planning on this but out of interest, can SoftRAID utilise drives of different sizes? What would happen if I tried to create a RAID using a 2TB and a 4TB drive?

Thanks!

SoftRAID does not care what brands or sizes disks are, as long as they are reliable.

If you Mirror different size drives, you get a volume base on the smaller of the two. (2TB in this case)
