I bought several of these to use in a RAID 5. SATA III. Thinner than a usual 3.5. Just FYI, when I inserted 1 in an OWC USB-C, two bay Drive Dock and tried to format in SoftRAID, crash. Same trying with Disk Utility. I sent them back but don't know what went wrong so I'm just saying.

the smaller size should not matter, perhaps it/they were indeed faulty.
