I just moved one of the WD Elements 5TB drives to my MacBook Pro during a storage reorganisation and so far is stable with USB S.M.A.R.T. feature. This is one of the drives that basically started this thread and even now crashes when i enable S.M.A.R.T. on my Mac mini.
Same OS version, same SoftRAID version, same gen of computers (MBP Mid 2012 non Retina and mini server late 2012).

You can add a disclaimer that it depends on the model/chipset inside and also that likely many other models might work as well, even if you haven't tested them.

If we only list a handful of specific models, users will assume those are the only ones that work, or that all models from that brand work, which is not the case. the chips inside enclosures can change within a model, even.

We do not have a formal list. We purchased drives from several manufacturers, such as Seagate, Western Digital, G-Tech, LaCie, Toshiba. We also tried USB enclosures, but there is no standard there. We are considering a tool that can collect data for us, so we can add support for more USB enclosures as we encounter them. There are too many to test and different versions from the same company respond differently, so this is not simple to do.
