I've used Soft RAID since OS X Tiger and have become addicted. I would like to replace a rat's nest of external drive bays with a NAS server, probably a QNAP TS-451+. Can SoftRAID volumes be created on the server when setup as JBOD? If so would the volumes be visible to and interact with the sever hardware and software?

A NAS is running Linux, so it will not see or mount any SoftRAID volume. Consider a 4/6 or 8 bay Thunderbay, which would be about the same for you, and allow all the drives to be controlled by SoftRAID.
