I am hoping to connect an older iMac (14,2) with Thunderbolt 2 to my Thunderbay 4 with Thunderbolt 3.

Unfortunately the StarTech adapter I had on hand for that purpose does not work; turns out it is TB3 host to TB2 peripheral only. (I swear they altered the description since I bought it 😞 )

Does anyone have experience with the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter for this purpose? The official description implies that it should be bidirectional.

the only adapter that reliably works is the Apple adapter. It is indeed bidirectional for disk drives. It does not support Thunderbolt 1 to 3, however.

I wanted to mention that on my two machines, a late 2012 MacBook pro, and a 2012 Mac Mini, the apple adapter does work going from Thunderbolt 1 to Thunderbolt 3 on my OWC Thunderbay 4, both with raid 5.

I wonder if later Macs do not, if your experience has been that they give problems.

There have been some reported issues with TB1 to 3, but many users are able to use them. I think most issues are display related. But officially this adapter is not supported for Thunderbolt 1.
