You can be assured this is not a SoftRAID bug, SoftRAID does not control what disks are appearing/disappearing, that is all controlled by MacOS and the hardware. SoftRAID's driver only tells macOS "I own it", when MacOS finds a disk and asks "who owns it".

There are several causes I can hypothesize:

Bug in the dock hardware, when presenting the card to MacOS
Timing issue where the card is not recognized (a race condition of some kind)
Bug where during startup, the card is deemed "ejected" in some way, then MacOS ignores it.
Bug in the card's firmware/design for MacOS.

I have not heard of any issue in our Docks relating to this, but I have many times over the years seen cards that do not show up, then I have to remove/reinsert them to get them to appear in MacOS. I never investigated this, as it was not anything relating to SoftRAID. This happens with the Mac's card slot in my case, as I have not used the slot in docks often.

I did a search on line, and cannot quite find this issue. Someone else must have had this issue. I will bring a card to the office and play around, see if I can reproduce this at all.

Last update. If the computer restarts and THEN I put the card into the reader, no disk and no volume.

But if the card is already in the reader and then I re-start the computer, then the disk shows and the volume mounts. Obviously that makes this card impractical to use but it doesn't appear there is an actual issue with the card or the cables between the dock and the computer. Looked to see if there were any firmware updates but evidently there are not for the Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock.

But it does seem bizarre. Last thing I could try would be to connect it to a computer without SoftRaid just in case there's some strange conflict caused by SoftRaid but how would that even be possible (and it would be a little inconvenient to hook a second computer up right now or to move the dock itself), but as a last resort for investigation, I might try.

Here's another highly interesting development. This has happened before but now I just repeated it 3 times in a row.

After my Dropbox upload that took days just finished, I was finally able to dismount all my volumes and re-start the computer.

The Silicon Power card was in the Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock and the disk wouldn't even show up again. Nothing would change that. I even gently felt (we're talking finger gentle) to see if the alignment could be moved or re-inserted a different way. Nope.

Then I left the card *EXACTLY* where it was in the reader/dock. Didn't touch a thing. Ejected all volumes, went to Finder to re-start (not even shut down).

Upon re-start, now Finder and SoftRaid show the volume contained on the card and the disk is showing up.

If I then ejected the volume and re-inserted the card into the reader, nothing, not even the disk itself would appear. If I then re-started, three times I did this, every single time, the volume shows up in Finder and the disk/volume are present in SoftRaid.

Not sure what this means. Furthermore, if I unmount the volume but don't remove the card, I can re-mount the volume. But if I remove the card and don't restart, then the disk will never be seen and the volume won't mount.

Could there be some kind of software conflict? I don't think it's a buggy version of SoftRaid, or -- if it is -- then it was buggy back in 2022 as well, and would not be on account of my SoftRaid version.

@softraid-support I'd have to check the paperwork but would assume the dock is out of warranty -- I bought it around January 2021 and don't remember the warranty-period but am basically absolutely certain that the dock is flawless. While it was most certainly still under warranty the same behavior happened which was when I called OWC. After retiring that card, no issues ever again with Angelbird cards (and now the SanDisk that just replaced the Angelbird that died). It seems very specific to the Silicon Power card only.

By all means if you can ask around, at this point I'm more curious than anything, but in the unlikely event there is a resolution, then I'd use the card again.

Just wondering if someone here can help give me any advice as a now 3+ year user of SoftRaid.

Several years ago....about three....I purchased a Silcon Power 256GB CFast 2.0 card for one of my BlackMagic Design cameras. Not all that long after, things began to get weird with the card when inserting it into my Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock (OWC). Frequently, it wouldn't recognize the disk at all (let alone mount the volume), but if I re-inserted, it would finally load.

This went on for some time until later that year it got worse and began to really concern me so I bought an Angelbird card instead (which just died last week and was replaced by a new SanDisk).

With other cards this has never been an issue, but in revisiting my CFast cards and running certification, I found the old Silicon Power card.

At the time I called OWC to confirm there were no compatibility issues with the reader in the Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock. Just recently, I re-certified the card again and it passed once more again.

Sometimes if the Mac won't recognize the disk, then re-starting the computer fixes it and the disk is seen.

I basically gave up on this card years ago and probably should have thrown it out but hate tossing anything in the trash that can be solved.

Any suggestions on last things to try before giving up on this card entirely 3 years later? The weird thing is that it's only in the Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock.

The cameras always recognize the card/volume immediately and all is well in-camera. Just have major issues with the dock reader loading the disk at all. In other words, it's not that the volume won't mount. It will. But the disk isn't even being recognized in SoftRaid, DiskUtility, or Finder.
