Greetings,

I have the same error with a disk to fail in 2 months or so. I am running SoftRAID lite on a 2007 Mac Pro, w 4TB internally RAID 1 with 4TB externally. I need to replace one internal drive (1TB) in bay 3.

Can someone please walk me through the process (briefly) or direct me to a forum where the method is defined with the steps to execute when replacing a disk? I'm relatively tech savvy but very part time, and can't seem to find basic instructions on how to proceed, and I don't wan't to screw up the data.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi, just received a couple of weeks ago my OWC thunder bay 4.
Had a seagate constellation ES.3, 4TB for a few months now and worked pretty good... still do, but when i put it in the enclosure the failure predicted warning popped up, saying that there were 65535 failed reallocations.
Ran the SMART test on various drive management apps and the raw value for SMART attributes 5;187;197;198 which refers to sector reallocations is 0.
Got 3 more 4TB drives 2X WD and 1 X seagate constellation ES.3, the WD drives are ok no warnings on the seagate drive, the same thing... failure predicted 21845 failed reallocation sectors. Did the same thing for this drive and SMART attributes mentioned above and the raw value is 0.
Is there any known compatibility with the seagate drives?
Wanted to create RAID 5 with 2xWD and 1XSeagate and got an error. Followed all the steps, certified the drives (0 errors on all 3 of them),initialized the drives than tryed to create RAID 5.
Any advice? i know the best way is to replace the seagate drives? but they seems ok to me apart of some temperature airflow warnings.
How can i upload some screenshots?
Thank you

We believe it is better to be pro-active, rather than reactive when it comes to replacing disks.

If you have an OWC Thunderbay, OWC has negotiated with their disk suppliers to replace any disk where SMART data triggers our predictive failure alert.

This means that you can get an immediate replacement now, rather than wait for the disk to actually fail.

Some times when a disk fails, it does so "rudely" and causes other problems, some of which can cause data corruption. So it is better to replace it first, before it fails.

The other day SoftRAID 5.5.5 post a warning message. See attached screen shot image.

How credible is this SMART prediction and what additional analysis does SoftRAID do with the SMART data to make this prediction ?

Should I replace this disk ASAP or simply wait for it to maybe fail over next 2 - 6 months ?

This disk is in a RAID-5 setup so losing it means a rebuild and no data loss.

Thanks for any advice.
