If you restat wihtout the disks connected then connect them after 2 minutes, the USB driver may load and report SMART.

SMART is always real time, but Apple makes it difficult to get SMART from USB devices.

I am having a situation where two disks in a RAID 5 were marked as "disk failure predicted". They passed certification with flying colors and when loaded in another server they pass SMART without giving any errors. I did re-certify them in the second server and then initialized them. However, when I put them back in the original server where they failed they show the "disk failure predicted" label again. Moving them back to the secondary server, the error messages are gone. Is it possible that the secondary machine doesn't complain about the imminent disk failure since it is running SMART over USB? Or, are SMART diagnostics written to a preferences file on the main server with the drive's serial number so that the error "sticks"?

Has anybody else have had this issue?

Hey Team,

Relative newby with RAID and SoftRaid, but had an interesting issue this weekend that is still in progress:

1.) Early Sunday monday I started to get errors from SoftRaid that my Raid 5 was degraded, and one disk wasn't operable;

2.) Ironically, I was asked to update to 5.8.2 at the same time so I went ahead thinking maybe this would clear the error, but no go.

3.) Rebooted machine, no go.

4.) let it sit for a few hours, and then shut it down completely, pulled out the suspect disk, gave it the good 'ol Nintendo 8-bit "blow", reinserted it and booted the machine

5.) Same error, but now SoftRaid was able to rebuild the drive.

6.) After rebuilding, Softraid doesn't show any errors, nor SMART Status failures, everything is reading green.

7.) Lastly, This RAID 5 is made up of 3 x brand new 10tb drives (seagate), and have been running issue free since NOV 2019.

So my ultimate question is, what would have caused this, and is this a bellwether for this particular disk beginning to fail?
