Once in a great while, a restart can mount the volume, but I doubt it. the disks are OK, it is just the volume directory that was damaged.

For HFS, there is Disk Warrior, which can rebuild volume directories (so far, it needs Big Sur or older as the boot volume, however)

there is no "repair" tool for APFS at this time.

APFS has its advantages, but for normal use, I would use HFS, its easier to deal with issues.

Bottom line, if your volume is unmountable, restore from backup. Easiest is delete the volume and create a new one. Select HFS based on this discussion.

Sorry, I'm confused.  How can I attempt to fix, if I can't mount it?   Also, does this mean a drive is dead and needs to be replaced, or that I'm just supposed to wipe and start again?  Should I be sticking witih Mac OS Journaled for the format type?  Not sure what my next step is.  Thanks.

APFS, by its design, should not get damaged directories, but it can. If that is the problem, you need to restore from backup, as Apple has no repair tools for APFS that do anything. (there are a couple apps that can "recover" data, such as Disk Drill and R-Studio, on APFS volumes.)

Having an issue with a Raid 4 volume.  About a week ago, I got an "out of sync" issue with one of my drives.  Softraid says it can still mount the volume, but it doesn't.  It says that all drives have no errors, except that one is out of sync and rebuilding.  Problem is that the drive just seems to sit there forever, and doesn't do anything.  Not sure if the drive it dead, or what.....any guidance would be helpful.  I'm attaching a snapshot, and a report for Tech Support.
