If OS X marks your volume as read only, it won't validate. this is to protect your data.

When the validate begins, there is a termometer for progress and it will show the time remaining. Validating a 15TB volume means reading 15TB of data, probably 15 hours at least.

Its recommended as there are other issues.
When replacing a disk one should:
Backup! (first)
Repair the volume with Disk Warrior, if possible. If the volume is OK, then use Disk Utility First Aid.
Validate - this ensures the disks are all readably and updates any parity information.

Then replace the disk.

You can do shortcuts, but you increase the risk of problems.

And always make sure you have a good backup before replacing a disk, in case you do something wrong, or something happens. the above steps reduce chances of data loss to an absolute minimum.

Hi everyone - I need to replace one of the failed disks in my RAID 5 volume. I have the new disk with me. I have a 4 x 5TB volume, operating at 15TB in RAID 5, currently ~12TB full. I initiated the volume validation last night, now it’s midday and Softraid just says “validating” with no indication of progress or how much more time it needs. Two questions:

1) Roughly how long should the validation of this 15TB (12TB full) volume take? I don’t need precision, just a rough range, I have a new iMac Pro so the Mac itself is usually quite fast.

2) Do I really need to validate before replacing a failed disk? Nothing (other than the failed disk) is giving me error messages within SoftRaid. I’d like to get the new disk in and let is start rebuilding as soon as possible.

Thanks for your help,
Omer.
