Update:  Inability to boot is due to connection of OWC Thunderbay 4 TB2 (using the Apple TB3->2 adapter).  The enclosure currently has 4 disks in 1+0 RAID (setup on previous Mac mini with SoftRaid XT).  I am able to load extension successfully and boot successfully only if Thunderbay is disconnected.  Please let us know if there is a preferred sequence to read the Thunderbay (ie should I connect it to the previous Mac mini with SoftRaid XT and erase/change RAID, etc).

@softraid-support It worked for me to approve OWC as developer as you suggested.  This was required after driver install, security settings, reboot.  Then approve OWC as developer and restart and all good.

Update 2:  SoftRaid 6.0.1 b46 is not compatible with RAID 1+0 on M1 Macs.  If I convert to RAID 0 (using SoftRaid XT 5.8.4), I can mount and use the array on my M1 Mac mini.  If I try to convert it back to 1+0 (from RAID 0) with the M1 Mac mini, it causes a crash and reboot (exactly the same as if I try to mount the RAID 1+0).

I thought I tested RAID 1+0 volumes but will recheck. If necessary, we will fix this in a update update next week.

I'm trying to get this going on an M1 Mac mini and running in to the issue saying I need to install extensions.  But I can't get the M1 Mac to boot in to Recovery mode by either holding the power button or the Command + R.

@pruthe

Good instructions, I will make sure these kinds of steps are available to users, thanks for reminding us.

Mountainman: Are you using a RAID 1+0 volume?

(or using the volume as a home folder)

That seems to be in common with users with problems.

Can you attach a support file.?

And post the contents of /Library/Extensions

You can get this using terminal: ls -als /Library/Extensions

I installed the b46 version on my M1 Mac mini, authorized the installation, rebooted and SoftRAID appears, shows my Thunderbay mini array correctly, but refuses to mount the array. It is all there and everything appears normal, it simply will not mount.

@ironPig

The power button trick should work. command r no longer works on M1 machines. Make sure you shut down all the way, then hold the power button down, until the windows shows up. Let us know.

Hi again,

One more thing. When I tried to connect my 2 USB based Sans Digital drive enclosures that were stripe formatted, my M1 system crashed. My OWC and Akitio drive enclosures worked fine though with the SD enclosures removed.

I've attached Softraid app screenshot of drives when connected to my Mac Pro (late 2013) running MacOS 10.15.7. All drives run fine on that system.

Thx.

@softraid-support that did it - We are in business!  Finally able to access my ThunderBay and ThunderBlade on the M1 Mac mini.

I ran the validation and got an error "Error Domain=KMErrorDomain Code=71 "Incompatible architecture: Binary is for x86_64, but needed arch arm64e"

I also checked in my Library/Extensions folder and have the Softraid kext along with 4 OWC kexts and 2 HighPoint kexts.

Both my volumes are not boot volumes. Just external storage. I will try formatting 1+0 back to 0 if it might help to test.

Another update. I feel like I am must be doing something wrong. I tried connecting my MEPQ to my MacBook Pro 2017 running Big Sur 11.1. Same installation process. I also cleaned out my /L/E folder and did a clean install of b46 downloaded. Everything installs fine but still drives dont mount. When I run a kextload -v 6, I get the following errors:

Error Domain=KMErrorDomain Code=31 "Error occurred while building a collection:

I just installed this on my M1 mini, RAID0 across 4 SATA SSDs in a Thunderbay 4 gets up to ~940MB/sec writes and ~900MB/sec reads.  RAID5 on the same disks is getting up to ~750MB/sec writes and ~720MB/sec reads.  This was one of my 2 hurdles of ditching my 2013 MacPro, I wish the vendor for my other KEXT was even developing or Catalina, let alone Big Sur with M1.

Thanks OWC!

@softraid-support I am using a RAID 1+0 volume in a Thunderbay 4 TB2 enclosure.  Not using it as a home folder or anything.  My M1 Mac mini reads the enclosure fine if I convert it to a RAID 0.  If I try to use the M1 Mac mini (SoftRaid 6.0.1 b46) to convert it to RAID 1+0, it crashes again.
