[Sticky] Big Sur on M1 machines and SoftRAID issues

I need a core dump from someone, so we can do a deep dive. Are you willing to?

Shut Down your M1 computer.

1. disable System Integrity Protection:

Startup into internet recovery mode. the sequence on the M1 is this:
Hit the power button once, then hold it down until you see the options window.
Click options, then continue.
Next screen click your startup volume. (f there is more than one)
Next screen again and enter your password
The macOS recovery screen should appear, go to the startup menu and run the "terminal.app"
Enter:
csrutil disable
It may give you a list of systems if you have more than 1.
If so, select the active startup volume, then enter y for yes in the next prompt
enter password again

2. Put the computer into debugging mode

Set NVRAM to capture the dump:
run the terminal.app in normal mode.
Paste this command in:
sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0xd44"
restart.

3. Create the core dump

Next time you panic, or hang, hold on to the power button for 1 second (only).
If the machine restarted from the crash, hold the power button for exactly 1 second immediately after restart.

4. Wait ten minutes, then use "go to folder" to go here:
/private/var/tmp/kernel_panics

There should be a file.

Now run the terminal.app and save a system Diagnostic file:

sudo sysdiagnose -f ~/Desktop

now, save a SoftRAID Technical support file.

Once you do this, I will want all three files. (it will be quite large)

We can transfer using "wetransfer" but please use the exact instructions are below. If you post the we transfer link to your post, I will delete it, so the files do not become public.

Instructions to send the Core dump, System Diagnose and tech support ffile:

go to the url:
wetransfer.com
Click the button that says "I Agree".
Click the "Add your files" button and select the Sysdiagnose file.
Click the ... Button.
Select the "Get transfer link" button.
Click the large "Get a Link" button.
After a short period of time, the wetransfer site will give you a link.
Send that link to us.

@softraid-support I’ve got things setup to do the dump. There was some error with the driver so a “new” driver installed and a reboot. I’m waiting on a kernel panic. Does the gathering of the files have to be so strict of a timeframe? If it does a kernel panic overnight, how do I get the timing right?

After a panic, you really need to collect the core dump right away, else the data scrolls out of logs, etc.  Just do what you can.

I came home today to find the iMac unresponsive, so I did a hard shutdown and a dump after coming back up.

dear support I don't have any logs and errors in the console when I run soft raid

Run this command in terminal to see what driver version is loading, if any:

sudo kextstat -b com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID

 

If you get no response, run this command and see if your driver loads:

sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext

The 6.0.4 driver is now loaded. Your volumes is mounted?

Updated to the latest OS 11.4 and SoftRaid. So far no crashes or  kernel panics.

Sorry I do not always understand your exact meaning.

Your volumes are now mounted? Does the SoftRAID app have a problem launching?

When you launch SoftRAID,  you get an error that the application failed? Or the Monitor failed?

When you look at the menu bar, is the SoftRAID icon there? (the SoftRAID Monitor is running)?

we are moving in a circle with you.. I have already sent screenshots and videos of what exactly happens when I run soft raid.. when I run soft raid - see screenshot. There is no SoftRAID icon in the menu bar.. what should I do? I am ready to cooperate

the fact the Monitor is not running (has crashed) is a good piece of information. We are planning on creating a debug version of SoftRAID, perhaps tomorrow. It will collect additional information and hopefully help us solve this.

One more question: when you restart, does the monitor (icon) ever show up? Does it disappear when you run the app, or disappear on its own?
