Some additional information.

I updated Bib Sur to 11.1, reinstalled .47 beta and tried again. Still no joy.

Keep getting error message that SoftRaid is unable to create a file system for the volume.

I tried both file systems. Same result.

I confirmed this is an M1 related problem by moving the ThunderBay 4 Mini to a Intel Mac Mini which is running .47 beta. The RAID 4 volume was created and mounted without a problem.

Technically it is a driver loading issue. If you connect to the M1, it won't mount. The driver is not loading.

Did you go through the steps in internet recovery to enable third party developers?

https://support.apple.com/en-lk/guide/mac-help/mchl768f7291/mac

and, did you "allow" OWC as a identified developer? (System Preferences/Security)

Make sure to enable Full Disk Access in System Preferences/Security/Privacy, also, so the application can access the disks (Just drag SoftRAID into the window for Full Disk access after unlocking the Preference pane)

Lets see if this gets you going.

After uninstalling Softraid, the system didn't crash for close to a day. So I installed it again and sure enough a few hours (again while the system was idle / "asleep") it crashed/rebooted again. Kernel crash dump included below (I removed UUIDs for privacy)

BTW: Does BigSur M1 come with a SoftRaid driver "out of the box"? Any way to revert to that?

No, we are no longer bundling with Apple starting with Apple silicon computers.

Run kextstat (in terminal) and make sure b47 is loading:

sudo kextstat -b com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID

I dont understand why this:

Sleep transition timed out after 35 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.driver.AppleTypeCPhy

Is related to SoftRAID's driver. I can ask on Monday to engineering.

Thanks for responding (on a weekend !)

I verified that b47 is used:

234 0 0xfffffe0006eb8000 0x4000 0x4000 com.softraid.driver.SoftRAID (6.0.1b47) 633010D3-ABF6-3F5F-8621-31EA36D2BC36 <15 5 4 3>

Yes, the Kernel dumps do not appear to be related to SoftRaid, my only correlation so far is that the system appears to be running stable without Softraid and unstable with Softraid.

I also just had the Thunderbay Flex "drop" again where it showed up as ejected (I had some scripts copy data to the disks, but the system was again not used interactively at the time).

I was not able to find any related log message (including a screenshot of the dialog as an attachment)

I will try a clean OS install next. During setup, I let the Apple Migration tool copy data from an Intel MacBook Pro. Maybe it copied something that interferes with the M1 Mac.

If you can capture a panic log, that would be appreciated. Apple will treat any kernel panics on the M1 seriously. The debugger on M1 is not working yet, but there should be panic logs, if you "report" the problem to Apple, hopefully "more info" will show it (save it to a text edit file if so)

Was the volume lock on the M1? That is not happy news, I would hope the new architecture would prevent this.

Next time you get that message, copy a 1K file to the volume. Is it indeed write protected?

The volume lock message was on the M1, but the disk worked fine after this happened. There were a number of popups like this (maybe 3 volume locks and disk removed without unmounting messages). I did a fresh install now to see if that helps. I am a bit suspicious that some of this may have been caused by the system copy from the old MacBook Pro to the M1 MacMini. I will capture logs next time this happens (if it happens). I also sent all the kernel panic logs to Apple via the built-in "sent to Apple" feature.

Save the kernel panic to text and get them to me, I would like to see what is in them. (copy/paste into text edit)

The volume lock says the disks in the IO registry were renumbered. (or is a bug in SoftRAID Monitor) If you can copy data to the volume reported to be locked, then it might be a reporting bug. Thanks

@dmwfotos

Attach a SoftRAID Tech Support file, I can see where it is not working, hopefully.

I did a complete rebuild of the system. No kernel panic so far, but the Raid5 volume stopped responding again and I got the "Volume Ejected" popup messages again.

The RAID 5 volume is on an OWC Thunderbay Flex 8. It is directly connected to an M1 MacMini via Thunderbolt 3. There is also a non-RAID SSD that is part of the Flex 8. The SSD is not affected (so this doesn't look like a cable issue, which should have affected both). The system was again idle with screensaver running.

Here are the logs I was able to spot. The log mentions unchecking "Put hard disks to sleep when possible". That checkbox was indeed checked (it is the default setting). I unchecked this now. Maybe that will help. But this may be something SoftRaid could check to make sure it is unchecked?

Running SoftRAID 6.0.1 b47.

As the logs show, this happened three times with exactly 5 minutes "pause". No data was lost as far as I can tell.
