I have a Thunderbay 4 (16TB) which I reinserted into the enclosure after about 3 years of having swapped it out for a different set of drives. It was a RAID 0. Since I last mounted the volumes, I've upgarded MacOS and SoftRaid. I'm currently running Monterey 12.6.9 on a 2016 13 inch macbook pro. I recently upgraded (trial version) to SoftRaid 7.6 from 6.1. I installed the latest SoftRaid driver and set the proper security permissions to allow SoftRaid access. I had 3 volumes on the drive, and ran into issues creating a 4th which I posted about in this forum previously. One of the drives is predicted to fail. I have a replacement at the ready, but I'm hoping to copy the data off the volumes prior to wiping everything. However, none of the volumes are appearing in SoftRaid. I'm concerned the drive may have already failed, but want to be certain before moving ahead.

Do the drives need to be inserted in the same slots in the enclosure they were originally in when the volumes were created? Or do I have bigger problems?

Including a report for tech support.

I'm helping a friend who is using an OWC Thunderbay 4 with a 2015 iMac running Monterey. The drive, with Softraid, worked fine until yesterday. At that point, her computer began running very slowly and we determined that her boot drive (fusion) was full. So we proceeded to remove files from that drive. As a final precaution we launched her machine in Safe Mode, which clears caches and does some other housekeeping.

After that, her Thunderbay no longer mounts. It has a status light on the front which indicates that it is connected to the computer (it's blue, not red). But the drive does not appear on the desktop, nor is it visible in Disk Utility.

The Softraid icon is not present in the main menu bar (it was visible yesterday). So we attempted to launch Softraid from the applications folder. The main app window appears for an instant and then disappears, and Softraid does not run (I'm assuming it has crashed). We believe she was running Softraid 6.2 (she has many versions in the applications folder -- but that's the latest).

Does anybody have any idea what went wrong here and what we can do?

Many thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help.

On my MacStudio running OS 12.6.8 and SR 7.0.1, I began having the sudden freezes/restarts described in this forum after I'd had months of smooth sailing. In my case, the error listed after returning to desktop is always "iBoot Panic."

After a day of intermittent iBoot panic restart cycles with 7.0.1, I decided to upgrade to SR 7.5 today – and after the installation, the issue only got worse: The system can't run more than 1-2 minutes after login before going into the freeze/restart cycle with "iBoot panic" error.

Now I'm wondering if my 7.5 installation process isn't executing properly:

First off, I DID boot into Recovery Mode many months ago (during first install of SoftRAID on this M1 Mac) to change the Startup Security Utility setting to "Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers."

But I'm NOT getting the prompt during SR 7.5 installation from within Security & Privacy prefs to click "Allow System software from developer OWC..." The SR 7.5 installation does prompt me to go into Security prefs to do that.... but there's no "Allow OWC..." message within the Security prefs window (pic attached).

To make this even more confusing: OWC's YouTube video "SoftRAID 7.5 is HERE!" says "The user can simply drag SoftRAID to Applications folder, and begin to work" without changing security settings as before, but (as pictured) the 7.5 install STILL directs the user to change settings in Security preferences.

So OWC's own video says install should proceed via simple "drag & drop" into Applications, but the 7.5 installer is showing that one should still go into Security prefs. So which is it? And why does neither method appear to be working?

Two connected Thunderbay4's appear and run just fine, however...

SoftRAID Monitor only shows connected disks/volumes upon first launch of the app. Any launch after that shows empty windows for both disks & volumes. I can only get Monitor to show all drives properly again after I Force Quit SoftRAID_Monitor via Activity Monitor.

I do rely on SoftRAID Monitor to mount/unmount my two Thunderbays several times a day as I switch between different clients' video edit projects and want only the current project's drive mounted at any given time.

Tech Support Flle is attached, but I will say that while the "no disks & volumes" issue is happening, the Utilities menu is dimmed out and won't allow me to generate a support file – I can only generate that file when SoftRAID Monitor is working properly (after a ForceQuite & re-launch).

We have a 128 TB Thunderbay 8 on SoftRAID 7.0.1. Ever since Big Sur, our 2017 iMac Pro has been crashing at shutdown and automatically rebooting. We then see the "Your Mac has been restarted due to a problem" message. We are currently on Monterey 12.5 and the issue still happens. We are aware of the known issue regarding the Mac kernel bug that causes the Mac to crash when there are a lot of large drives attached. I expect that this is what is happening. If you count all 8 drives in the Thunderbay enclosure, our Time Machine drive, and a few other drives, that comes to nearly 12 or so. I have tried ejecting (unmounting) ALL drives prior to shutdown (but not physically disconnecting them) but the Mac still crashes and reboots with all drives ejected. The only way we've found to get the Mac to shut down properly is by ejecting the Thunderbay 8 enclosure and then physically powering off the enclosure using the power switch on the back. As long as the Thunderbay 8 is physically connected and powered on (ejected or not), the Mac crashes and reboots. We really would rather not have to physically power off the enclosure every time we want to shut down the iMac Pro. This is especially a problem when we schedule the Mac to automatically shut down at a specific time and we are not around to eject and power off the Thunderbay 8.

I have included two panic logs (one from when all drives were mounted and then a second after attempting shutdown with all drives ejected) and our SoftRAID 7.0.1 support file for your review. We are hoping that there is a solution by now to avoid this shutdown crashing problem. Thank you very much.

The volume mounts and appears to be just fine, but the SoftRAID app opens with a blank window and all the menu items are greyed out. I've verified that the new extension is loading but haven't tried the older version of the app, nor have I uninstalled/reinstalled. Was kinda hoping that kicking it in the cache would help, but no.

My initial install was 6.3 (XT), and it installed and ran great - did the entire setup new with this rig. Then upgraded to SR 7.0 XT, which also installed and ran just fine, until I updated this morning.

I haven't tried opening the 7.0 app with the 7.0.1 extension, though I have tried downloading a fresh copy and overwriting the old one. No dice. I have opened a support ticket, but no response so far.

Anyone else, or just me?

Here's the setup:

TB4 is a RAID5 array of 4x 8TB drives(24TB)

Had a couple kernel panics/reboots recently(which I'm not sure are related to anything other than a funky usb hub I have connected to the Mac Studio.

When it comes back from the reboot it displays the attached image warning.

Now, I can double click on the raid drive that is the thunderbay unit...that is the one giant drive that is the RAID5 array shows up...it's just looks like it is read-only.

Which is not ideal.

If I check the softraid window it says there are no errors on the drives themselves, which makes me think this is just a software issue.

I'm thinking about uninstalling the softraid software and reinstalling it in the hopes that that will "reset" the permissions and perhaps that will turn this drive into a read-write drive again.

Because the alternative is to download everything from backblaze which will take forever...

But before I do that is there something anyone might have that I could try? If I were to reinstall the softraid SW could it lose the drive totally? THAT I def. don't want to do...

This is Monterey 12.6.1 with latest updates and SoftRAID XT 6.3.

FWIW I *just upgraded to 12.6.1 a few days before this started...but I still think the kernel panics are *not* related as they have stopped since I removed the offending USB hub/device.

I'm thinking that one of these kernel panics managed to hose something that allowed softrad XT to read/write the array.

Thanks!
