@steve223

You do not need to denigrate OWC on the SoftRAID support forum. We stand by our products 100% and support them. No scenario is guaranteed perfect, I understand you had problems, but this is for technical support.

Promise does not support Pegasus on ARM.It simply does not, nor never will work on M1, etc.

They do not offer spare parts, or any support at all for Pegasus. So if you have an issue, good luck.

We still support the original Thunderbay, from 2014.

Despite your experience, its clear OWC is the better choice, at least for others. If you want to contribute, do, but ongoing negativity will not be allowed.

@softraid-support hm I'm just sharing my experiences, I have a decent size YouTube Channel and needed additional storage solutions for my footage, unfortunately, I only went by the spill on your product pages,

I should have looked in the support forum before I purchased as non of the issue (you know exists) are mentioned on your website as a warning.

I lost a good amount of money purchasing OWC products and sold two of the 3 OWC Raid's I bought because of constant issues.

The one I have left over a year later is still giving issues, and I need to jump through hoops to get it to work.

It seems that Apple, for whatever reason, does not like Software Raid solutions anymore and has had several issues with it (for quite some time now) several other Hardware Raid solutions I run like Promise and even a Drobo (horrible support if something goes wrong)

do not have these issues.

Your support is good, no question, but if there are known incompatibilities between your product and Apple (no matter whos fault) you need to state this clearly on your website so people can make an informed decision before purchasing and not find out the issue after

spending many $1000 dollars.

@steve223

I do feel your pain, I am sorry for the hassles. I can generally get most all users working. And it is frustrating.

We are working with Apple to resolve most of these issues, I think partly caused by rushing out a new OS every year. But the solutions take time.

this is primarily user interface, however the M1 kernel panic should embarrass Apple that they are taking 18 months to fix (there is a fix in Ventura)

Not to mention the many hardware Thunderbolt issues, which is on intel and Apple. I get frustrated also.

But look at the alternative users have. they can spend much more on "hardware" RAID, where companies stop supporting the products, or go bankrupt. Or USB, which really is awful on a Mac, I don't know about Windows, but macOS USB support is awful comparatively.

What we do is make the best hardware we can for the value, support it with excellent support and deal with issues that come up..

That is better than most companies do.

@softraid-support, yes, as I said, your hardware is excellent and well priced (hence I bought it). I can also see Apple's constant changes don't make it easy for developers, but all this does not matter if the product is not working reliably, and you need to be scared that every OS upgrade will break it again and render all my data hostage.

Be transparent about the issues and give people a warning.

I wished you guy's would move from a software raid solution to a hardware raid solution as they seem to have way fewer issues and don't rely that much on the compatibility of MacOs and your software

@steve223

Hardware RAID has its own issues. Constant firmware upgrades, tracking firmware updates, and writing updaters that work on different OS's. (Apple requires us to write a driver just to update the firmware on Thunderbays', so it is messy)

Controller cards change, go obsolete, and then you need to stock years of replacements and when you run out, users are screwed, they lose their data. You cannot move drives from one enclosure to another, generally. Some controllers allow this ,some do not, sometimes within the same OEM manufacturer.

That is partly why hardware RAID is more expensive. Notice that no one serious uses hardware RAID any longer. All the big players moved to software RAID.

The problem in my opinion, is Apple letting its "security" team drive development. Until they go back to letting user experience determine the user experience, macOS is a mess. We have a macOS environment where the lowest demonitor users have a good experience. But as you add any complexity (extra monitors, drives, etc.) relibility and usability goes to heck.

I am pretty sure Apple has a development plan to address this, but it is two years late, from original announcements to developers. There are still no solutions, so it may be another year or two.

MacOS is a mess for "prosumer" and professional users right now. Because of Apples history, most users are sticking with macOS, especially as the ARM architecture is so far ahead of intel for smaller machines/laptops.

But the higher end is a problem. Just like Apple walked away from servers, they may lose a lot of high end accounts over time, if they do not make it easier for a video editor to connect multiple drive enclosures to their editing stations, add a few monitors, etc. These guys (from my perspective) do not like, or want, to be technical experts, they just want to work on their editing suites.

@softraid-support I completely agree with everything you said about Apple and I use Apple for well over 20 years (Started with a Mac SE 12”) and Apple is a mess but the new ARM hardware is good.

I can only go  y my experience i’m on my second Promise first one bought when they came out only Thunderbolt 2 and never ever had an issue with it. So for me it just worked as a Raid did.

@steve223

I was one of the "100 day" purchasers of the original Mac. Seems like forever. I also have been active since 1984, whether upgrading memory, making external hard drives, RAID, etc.

MacOS 10 was such a change for the better, but somewhere around 10.6, Apple started making prettiness a priority over functionality.

M1's are a huge reset for Apple. Its their chance to make everything right. But the fear over possible security issues is still handicapping user experience. And I am not a big fan of turning the mac into a less portable iphone.

I'm having an issue with 6.3 since installing it where the app won't open and it just crashes immediately. I've tried opening 6.2.1 which I didn't delete yet because I wanted to see if 6.3 works properly first, and now 6.2.1 won't open either. Softraid monitor is still running and so I'm able to use my ThunderBay volumes, but I can't open the softraid apps. Any ideas? I've tried to attach the crash report but the forum won't accept .txt or .rtf files.

@jjdodders

If you "save as plain text" on Text edit, you can attach it.

What is the error message you get in SoftRAID?

@softraid-support

I've just tried again and it worked this time... even though its the same file as I tried to upload this morning. A bit odd!

There are no error messages at all. I click the app icon, it bounces in the dock for about 1 sec and immediately stops responding and needs to be force quit. It does that every time. I have restarted my Mac and tried again but still the same problem.

Let me know next how often this happens (%), or if it is gone completely.

@softraid-support

It is doing this every time I try to launch the application. The app icon bounces once in the dock and then it becomes unresponsive and no window opens.

SoftRAID Monitor is running in the background and seems to be fine, but trying the softraid app doesn't work.

@jjdodders

Lets try a simple approach. Run this in terminal.app:

sudo softraidtool uninstall

restart and reinstall SoftRAID driver.

Allow OWC, etc.

Does this solve the problem launching the app?
