A while ago I requested reimbursement for my SoftRaid 6 purchase because it could not mount my RAID 5 volume as it does on Mojave. Nevertheless, I decided today to once more try upgrading to Monterey on my iMac 27 Late 2015, in the hopes that SoftRaid will finally have fixed that issue.

But to my dismay, the issue continues - no mounting whatsoever. The only “silver lining” here is that this time I am STILL on the trial instead of paying for it. So my question is: how can it still NOT work? Do I have now to somehow start on Mojave, reinstall SR 5 just to access my RAID and save everything into another HD?

What gives?

Monterey will definitely work on intel. Remember you MUST "allow" OWC in System Preferences/Security.

Uninstall the driver (utilities menu), and restart. Install the driver. Do not restart yet.

Go to System Preferences/Security and see if "Allow" OWC is available. Allow it, and you should be good.

@softraid-support Sorry, it does not work.

Driver uninstalled, restarted, driver installed again and no security prompt whatsoever. RAID 5 still does not show a disk identifier, even though it loads fine under Mojave.

And here is the Terminal message when trying to manually load the kext with sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext:

And here is the screenshot of the error message that is displayed EVEN after deleting the old RAID and trying to create a new one:

If I do not receive a quick solution to this fundamental issue, I will be obliged to move elsewhere (OpenZFS or so) - thank you.

In sum, an unmitigated disaster - disabled SIP, ran as root user, ran as a different user, initialized all disks, and nothing works (and no, there was NEVER a security prompt to allow OWC). Yet if I try the same on Mojave, all fine. And to add insult to injury, all my comments above remain unanswered and "awaiting moderation".

So dear SoftRaid staff: before advertising your solution as flawless, easy to use and "compatible" with Monterey, check things - because it is NOT. I am now relying on a single HD that backs up all my previous RAID content, since the latter was lost in order to allow for all the failed attempts above.

@ricardogf

Since you are not getting the prompt to "Allow" the driver to be able to load, there is a problem in your system.

This is not an M1 system, correct?

Lets check for quarantine. Just in case. Run this in terminal:

sudo xattr /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext

If there is no quarantine bit set, then attach a support file. Maybe I can see a clue.

@softraid-support No, it's not M1; it's Intel.

As for the above command, the only response it gives is this: "com.apple.quarantine".

So shall I just give up and do a clean install to see if things work out?

There is your problem, macOS quarantined the driver. Possibly because the app was copied from another computer.

try running these in terminal. Some may have no file found, don't worry, those the USB SMART driers.

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Library/Extensions/OWC_SCSI_Device.kext

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Library/Extensions/OWC_SATA_Command.kext

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Library/Extensions/OWC_SCSI_Device_0E.kext

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Library/Extensions/OWC_SMART_Library.plugin

To verify that you were successful, repeat the simple "xattr" command earlier, i.e.:
xattr /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext

You can test the application also, by:

xattr <space> <path to SoftRAID>

Type xattr, a space, then find the SoftRAID app and drop it onto the terminal window, which will complete the path. Its unlikely the application is quarantined.

I guess I was finally able to get it to work - I just deleted all the extensions under Library/Extensions and installed SR again - not sure if I am gonna need any of them again, but the volume is mounting at least. Thank you for your efforts in troubleshooting the issue.

@ricardogf

those are third party, some bundled with macOS, which you are unlikely to ever need.

@ricardogf Do not blame SoftRAID for Apple's terrible Monterey issues. Once again Apple released a buggy macOS system. It's the management who wants to release a new OS every year. Before M1 Macs you have had at least an option to go back. It is Apple who forces users to use Monterey on all new Macs. There's no option to go back to Mojave on latest Macs. Indeed it is Apple who thinks Third Party RAID solutions are not important for professional users.
