Thanks. I assume you are referring to Disk Utility in Finder. I do not know yet because I never erased the disk that way. It contained an old clone of an old computer that was transferred to another drive before I began. At that stage, I deleted the volume in SoftRaid and began disk certification.

After I restarted my computer again, SoftRaid did allow me to Initialize the disk and I was able to create volumes on it, but now with this answer, I will attempt to erase the disk if you tell me I need to.

If the disk is in fact failing, obviously I'll replace it, just didn't want to do that unless the disk is truly failing. So whatever I hear back will determine whether or not I buy another drive!!! Want me to try to erase using Disk Utility and get back to you?

Short Version, after heavily investing in a loaded up ThunderBay, multiple computers and cameras, I'm broke and so I'm trying to recycle my old hub-powered drives for Carbon Copy local drive backups (won't bore anyone with why I don't use the ThunderBay for that). This led to taking my 2TB hub-powered Seagate drive from several years ago, wiping it, and certifying. It took 48 hours and the disk passed 4 rounds of certification with 0 errors. But when I tried to Initialize the disk to create the volume(s), I got this error:

"An error occurred during initializing a disk. This disk hung during a read. This disk should be replaced. You may have to restart your Mac before this disk will respond again."

Now what? Did I really just waste 48 hours passing certification in order to find out that it actually didn't pass?
