Defragmentation does not require special treatment on Thunderbolt or SoftRAID volumes. Any defrag application such as idefrag will work fine.

Defragmentation is not needed on System volumes, but if you add/delete files frequently on other volumes, the files can become fragmented. Most users deal with this by a simple backup/restore, but you can use defragmentation software for this also.

Apple recommends 15% free space on a volume. With huge volumes, it is important to have space for files to be moved/added/updated. So you are OK at present. (remember full disks also are slower, so you may notice file copying has slowed down, as your volume fills up.)

What in your opinion is a decent amount to keep free.. (I've never used a 4 bay RAID 5 system before..

Also DEFRAGING... I haven't looked but i'm wondering about fragmentation.. This drive is mostly dedicated to streaming sample libraries (Native Instrument KONTAKT),

Sampletank, Superior Drums etc..

Do you have advice on defraging? How much free space do I need to comfortably do it.. (I can offload extraneous storage)... Do you recommend a certain program for it.. Is it necessary..

I imagine defragmentation would take quite a while.. (but I've never had Thunderbolt before.

Thanx..
