One of Four Drives Taking Much Longer to Certify In An Express 4M2
Hello, First I would like to apologize if this topic is out there someplace. I searched and read manuals, websites, FAQs for a hour or so before giving up and asking the forum.
Tonight I set up the 4M2 NVME enclosure and put 4 identical Sabrent 2 TB Rocket sticks in. SoftRAID Lite XT saw them with no difficulties as I plugged the 4M2 directly into the TB3 port on my 2020 i9 128 GB iMac. The problem came when I started Certifying the drives. I elected to simultaneously run all 4 drives. 3 of the drives were speeding along and the 4th drive (ID 1) was running at 1/10th the speed. The other 3 drives have finished, taking only an hour and the 4th drive still has 4 hours to go. No errors on any of the drives.
Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? My concern isn't how long the Certifying is taking, it is based on the fear that this 2 TB stick will run this slowly once it is part of a RAID 0 Striping volume.
Thank you, Kevin
Seems defective to me. Certify is a command line script that should go as fast as the drive is capable of. Watch in Activity Monitor to get an idea of how much throughput is going into or out of the disk. While variances are understandable, it seems like you have a disk that is faulty.
Thank you for the quick response. When I opened the 4M2 up I noticed that one of the drives had a shiny sticker and the other 3 a flat finish. I used your light the led light utility (Thank you very much) and, sure enough, the slow one had the shiny sticker. I think we might be running into an old drive which needs to be updated. I am ordering another of the flat stickered new drive and putting the shiny one into a USB-C NVME enclosure and will play with it on my Surface. Sabrent only has a Windows 10 drive diagnostics tool.
Thank you, Kevin
