The certify results will be in the SoftRAID log. It is not intended to stay as a permanent record, as when you do anything to the disk, such as initialize it, the certify status is lost. A certified disk (and also a "zeroed disk" has no partition map and no where to store such data.

If the drive reallocated sectors, that is information that is stored on the disk, and is "permanent".

If a disk is in SoftRAID format and encounters a disk error, SoftRAID stores that information in the SoftRAID partition, so it is kept "permanently". (until cleared). This helps you track bad/failing drives.

I finally upgraded to El Capitan on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I had two RAID 0's ( first: 3 x 1Tb WD Blacks, second: 2 x 500 Gb SSD's on pci card)

I backed up ALL the drives and installed SoftRaid to explore what it could do for me and how.

First, I certified all the RID drives. All but one WD drive passed. The 1T WD drive was flagged and showed "20 to 60 times more likely to fail".

I bought a replacement and did some learning (experimenting!)

A SoftRaid RAID 0 was much faster than the Apple software RAID (3 x 1T WD's)
The SoftRaid RAID 4 and 5 were slightly faster than the Apple software RAID (4 x 1T WD's)

So I plumped for a RAID 4 on the basis that if the drive that failed a Certify DID fail, it's a RAID 4 and it will tell me, THEN I'll bin the drive!

Then I realised that the "certify fail" flag had disappeared.

Was this caused by my repeatedly creating and deleting RAIDS?

Or could it have mended itself?

Regards
Martin
