In one of my calls with Technical Support after sending a Tech Support Report, I was told that I should not have created four separate disk volumes on a mirrored pair of 16TB disks. The discussion then led to considering buying even more disks to offload everything, delete the mirror volume, and restore to a new, single mirrored volume.

But knowing SoftRAID quite well after everything that just happened, with the understanding that RAID is not a backup to begin with, is there any compelling reason why I should not just split off the secondary disk of each volume a non-RAID volume, delete the 4 disks volumes on the primary, then create a new single volume on said primary, transfer the data onto this new primary containing a single volume, and then convert that volume into a new mirror at the end?

Of course I'd confirm full backups prior to this. It wasn't really clear to me how backing everything up to a single new disk and then wiping the mirror would be any more secure than splitting the mirror using the pair already here. Isn't the vulnerability of a single-disk the same either way?

But I believe that all those volumes are already on other disks in-house (making the mirror already a backup) and I'll check the offsite disks to find out about those too before doing anything at all.

Hi, this should be a simple question:

Are the read operations against a RAID1 mirrored volume performed in a striped manner to increase read throughput? Or are the reads operations performed only form the primary disk (with the secondary laying dormant / discarded / spare)?

I see the "I/O request" counter increasing on both primary & secondary, but it's not clear to me whether RAID1 offers a read speed benefit.

I ask because I'm evaluating whether a 3x disk RAID5 volume would generate better read performance vs. a 2x disk RAID1 mirror -- or whether they should produce -- effectively -- the same read speed. Note: I'm putting aside differences in write performance (I understand that difference between RAID1 & 5).

Thanks!

I have a HDD which has my data that I don't want to lose and an initialized HDD to be the secondary drive. I select the drive in Softraid and choose convert then select the one to be the secondary drive. In the disk column it says it's setting up -- changing status -- (I forget the wording, it disappears too quickly for me) but then I still don't seem to have a mirror because when I click on the primary disk in the Volume Column it only connects to its HDD in the Disk column.

I'd like to use 1 as my primary and the 2nd as my mirrored backup, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. I created the volumes on both externals and setup them up for RAID 1, where do I go from here? Sorry for the newb question, but I searched all day in the forum and can't figure out what to do next.

I am running a Mac with a 4-bay Mercury Quad Pro enclosure with two sets of mirrored drives, an 8TB set and a 4TB set. My 8TB mirror is full and I need to upgrade to larger drives (which will be a 14TB set), and I'm wondering what the safest/best way to do that would be. Can I just pull out one of the 8TB drives and re-mirror the remaining drive to the new 14TB drive, then swap out the remaining 8TB for the other new 14TB and re-mirror again? Or should I just pull out the 4TB set, put in both new 14TB dives in those bays, create a new volume, and copy the 8TB volume to the new 14TB volume? Will my 4TB volume be intact if I temporarily remove the drives from the enclosure then just put them back in?

I have seen other threads mentioning "certifying" drives before creating volumes, but I can't really find much in the way of documentation about what that means or the details of that process. And since all of my enclosure bays are full, I'm not clear on how I would "certify" a new drive without breaking my existing volume(s).

Any clarity or suggestions would be appreciated!

Some things happened and I ended up with a split mirror. To fix this, I initialized one of the disks, added it as a secondary disk for the HFS volume, and let it rebuild. That went fine. I attempted to do the same with the APFS volume, but that didn't work.

I can add the secondary disk to the APFS volume, which completes successfully according to the SoftRAID log, but the volume still appears as missing a secondary volume (I cleared the secondary disks before doing this), and the secondary disk shows too much available space. The primary disk has 134 MB available, while the secondary still has 3 TB.

As this is only for Time Machine I don't care that much, but would prefer to avoid wiping the volume.
