Hello All,

A long time SoftRAID user here and currently running the latest 5.x version on my Mac-Mini. I want to create a RAID-1 set and currently have the main drive with Data on it and my question, is what are the steps to add the second drive and create a Mirror without losing any data on my main primary Hard Drive.

The Primary drive is already SafeGuard enabled as well as the new empty drive. Just looking for some steps on what I would need to do in order to create the RAID-1 volume without losing any data. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Vin.

I will assume you have a volume in Apple format.It is not a startup volume, just a data volume, as stated. Also it is not APFS ,it is an HFs volume.

Make sure your backup is current!

unmount the volume from the desktop

In SoftRAID select this volume and "Convert to SoftRAID".

Initialize the second disk with SoftRAID.

Click on the startup volume again and "Convert to Mirror" and select the second disk.

Let it rebuild.

that should be all.

Thanks for the help/feedback. Is there a reason that I need to select the startup volume as that is not the volume I want to create the RAID-1 mirror?

Also, I am not seeing the option to 'Convert to Mirror' - Can you please provide some step by step instructions or point me to the manual so I know where I am supposed to be clicking on exactly, as it is not clear to me. Also, you may be referring to options in the latest 6.0 version but things may be different as I am on version 5.8.4?

I also received this pop up window that reads: An internal part of the SoftRAID application has stopped functioning properly. Please quit SoftRAID and relaunch it.  I have never seen this error before prior to running this on a later OS (Mojave) - Is there something I need to do to resolve this? I had installed the newer 6.0 version but then realized it was not a free upgrade and downgraded back to version 5. Could something have corrupt during that process?

Cheers,
Vincenzo.

@vinbob

To "reinstall SoftRAID driver", was what I was referring to.

Take the "second disk" and initiialize it with SoftRAID.

Click on the Apple volume (we do not support converting APFS)

"Convert" should be available now

Select convert to SoftRAID Non RAID.

Click on teh volume again (you will probably need to disable Safeguard) and Convert to a mirror and add your disk.

I had the same problem and this post gave met the solution.

However, it is not very intuitive to convert a disk to a non-raid softraid volume when your intention is to create a raid-1 mirror. My reaction to that was "that is not what I want, so that is not the option I should use". I had to register to the forum to to accomplish what should be a simple and intuitive task. To me (as a software developer) that is poor UI design.

I would be more intuitive to see both options:

- convert to non-raid softraid volume

- use this disk as the primary disk of a raid 1 volume

@gino-eelen

We originally did not do that, as it involved a lot more moving pieces and X-code was not cooperating.

We are doing a UI change with 7.0 and lots of UI features may change.
