I’ve currently got a Raid1 volume built on 2 external drives.
I want to move that volume to an external enclosure with 3 bigger disks and increase the volume size.
Can you confirm that this is the correct process?
install enclosure and 1 drive, certify drive, add drive to Raid1 volume as 3rd mirror
Wait for the mirror to sync
install 2nd enclosure drive, certify
remove secondary external drive from mirror
add 2nd enclosure drive to mirror, wait for sync
make one of the enclosure drives the primary
install 3rd enclosure drive, certify
remove final external (old primary) drive from volume
add 3rd enclosure drive to mirror, wait for sync
grow volume
Certify all the drives at the same time. It takes the same time to certify one, as three.
Other than that, you have it understood.
Aaarrgh - no, it won't work, this is an APFS volume and it looks as if you can't resize those :-(
Not yet. We are working on this for 6.1, it is not in the beta yet and I am not sure if it will make the cut.
Unfortunate..
Ok, so while we're waiting for APFS resizing to happen I guess I could just setup a new bigger RAID-1 with the new disks and then just copy everything over, easy! However, in order for my load-based backups to NOT recopy over every file again if I "cp -p" that should preserve the timestamps on the files, and if the new RAID is named the same as the old then in theory as far the the backup software is concerned nothing should have changed - do you think there's any chance of this actually working? otherwise I'm looking at sending 5TB of media files out over my internet connection, which will be fun :-)
Not quite, as Time Machine and other backup software (in fact all apps), use the VolumeID to recognize the volume, not the name.
You may need to reset the path to the backups.
Ok, thanks
Out of interest, is it possible to set the VolumeID on the new RAID volume to be the same as the old?
