The SoftRAID v6.0.5 is not compatible with macOS Monterey 12.0 Beta at this time.

When will this be resolved? Thanks.

We will create a beta version of SoftRAID ASAP that will give preliminary supprot for Monterey. I am hoping this week.

We have a first beta of SoftRAID 6.1. There are no significant changes to 6.0.5, but it will have continuing improvements over each beta.

@barrysharp Agreed! After the way it went last year (through no fault of the SoftRaid team I must add) I was thinking I would avoid the beta of Monterey this time, but now that I know SoftRAID is going to work just fine, I'll probably jump in if Adobe applications will work.

@zathras

I have done basic testing of Monterey, does not seem like major changes, so it should work. You need 6.1 beta to run under Monterey. "Driver kit" is not released, so the drivers load the same as Big Sur.

@softraid-support I thought I would get a head start, so I installed the beta in Big Sur so that when I upgrade to the public beta next month that's one less step I would have to take.

It's working just fine with the latest version of Big Sur, with an exception so far. It's reporting the RAID is not mounted when in fact it is.

When I generated a report for tech support it gave me a date back in 2020 and said it was for beta 48. (Odd?)

Anyway, so far otherwise it seems to be working just fine.

@zathras

Remember we are working on APFS, so until we have that working it will show as unmounted.

I don't know about the date, but maybe the save dialog box remembered your last support file saved's name?

We should be saving the current time/date in the support file, which should be system generated.

Good to know. So far it's been working perfectly for me.

I don't think I formatted it APFS. Waiting for the go-ahead from you guys. Probably won't do it until I have Monterey.

Just downloaded beta 2. Backup time!

I have SoftRAID 6.1 b 2 running under macOS 12 on my M1 mini and the array is working correctly. I don't have a problem, but  couple of comments for your developers to consider:

  1. When I installed the new driver. SoftRAID reported "your system is now ready to be used". Had I not known from previous experience to open System Preferences > Security & Privacy and approve OWC it would not be running.
  2. SoftRAID 6.1 b 2 reports the format of the array as unknown (it is APFS) so I assume the APFS compatibility is yet to be worked out. That is disappointing.
  3. Other than those two outstanding issues I am well pleased and want to say to one and all, well done.

@joemikeb

Thanks. SoftRAID 6.1 will be adding full APFS support, at present the application does not understand APFS.

I understand the driver issue, that you must "Allow". This is something that is being looked at, yes.

Under Big Sur SoftRAID 6.0.5 was subject to rare instances of disconnection when one of the drives in the array would unexpectedly disconnect. This might happen once or twice a week. On Monterey, SoftRAID 6.1 is disconnecting every day. I have attached before and after Tech Support Reports for your information. In the meantime I have set...

  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power > Prevent your Mac from sleeping automatically when the display sleeps — ON
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power > Put hard disks to sleep when possible — OFF
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule > Sleep — OFF

NOTE: another HD not associated with the RAID array has also reported several unexpected dismounts as well.

@joemikeb

I have not been able to reproduce this, as I suspected. this is mostly a hardware issue where a Thunderbolt chip somewhere is resetting.

try moving cables around, resetting them. reorder your other enclosure to put it "first" and see if the ejects only happen further down the chain (your main enclosure, as if the main enclosure is resetting the bus,  then it won't affect devices before it in the chain, is my theory.)

I have not encountered the disconnect of either the RAID array or the USB drive since I changing all the Energy Saver settings, but it is still early days. So rather than confuse the solution space I will let that ride for a few days before changing anything else. If it does recur I will let you know and take your advice and reorder the chain and see if that has any effect. Thanks

It has been almost two weeks since I...

…and the RAID array has not disconnected once. Prior to that it was disconnecting once or twice a day, so I am satisfied that the work-around is a success, but it should not be necessary to use a work-around. One other item, until I changed those settings other external drives were also disconnecting as well so the issue would appear to be Apple's and has been reported via Feedback Assistant.
