From Adam Hokin - Product Manager for SoftRAID and all other OWC software:

Hey all,

I'm the software product manager at OWC. Our team heavily monitors feedback and real-world usage from here and other sites.

I’ve had amazing calls with DITs (Digital Imaging Technicians - some are members of the SoftRAID Forum) about their good and bad SoftRAID experiences. I want to continue the group engagement as we approach our next major software release.

OWC is hosting an AMA (ask me anything) style livestream with myself and SoftRAID’s lead engineers later this month. I’d appreciate hearing questions from this group on anything related to SoftRAID in this post’s comments.

This is an opportunity to ask the most knowledgeable experts in the world about SoftRAID / software RAID / OWC storage questions. My only ask is that these be constructive and are framed as questions. I will pick the questions for the livestream and we will field on video.

Thank you all. I’m looking forward to continuing engagement with the community!

I have seen posts going back at least 2 years stating some version of “It’s coming”. I personally would love the option for RAID 6. I actually think a lot of pro photographers/videographers and the like would adore having this extra peace of mind that comes with RAID 6. I also believe it would be a highly beneficial business move for SoftRAID. Can anyone point out another macOS / Windows piece of software that can do what SoftRAID does that supports RAID 6 for DAS configurations? I don’t think it exists. I know there is a demand I know the community would like RAID 6 implemented as an option ASAP.

I just created my first volume with SoftRAID and a ThunderBay 8, and everything is working well. I have a question that I feel dumb for asking. What is the best/recommended procedure for powering down a ThunderBay 8? I'm assuming I can restart and/or shut down my server and then switch off the ThunderBay 8. Or, can I simply "Eject" the drive from the desktop and then switch off the ThunderBay 8? With the RAID being controlled from the server I don't know how fragile this relationship is. I come from a Drobo environment where I always went into the Drobo Dashboard to power down the enclosures.

Another question, kind of related. I live in an area where have power failures 2-4 time a year. I have the server and enclosures on a UPS. I'm worried that if I not home and I have a power outage that last longer than my UPS something could go wrong. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Just FYI, my server is a Mac Studio and I have 2 ThunderBay 8's, one RAID 0 being backed up to another RAID 5.

I have a Thunderbay Mini 4 enclosure filled with 2TB 2.5" hard disk drives arranged either as RAID 1 + 0 or RAID 5. These don't seem to last very well. Initially an easy 100MB/sec plus per drive on large files in the TB4 Mini. But after a month or five the transfer rate drops a great deal - sometimes.

Testing the drives using AJA System Test Lite, I can see that writes have a problem. The transfer rate varies across the GB of data, hitting 100MB/sec sometimes and dropping to 4 or fewer MB/sec for some substantial amount of data. Looks like a noisy square wave.

I attach a .pdf document showing results for the worst drive (with the disks in a USB-2 connected Voyager S3, so max speed is 38MB/sec).

1718

But to do this I need to delete the volume, reformat the drives with Disk Utility, and then measure.

So, to the point: could you consider adding a "test this disk drive's performance" capability that would do something like what the Aja test does, on a drive still part of a volume, using some blocks which were not part of a file? Even better if the results were shown in a manner similar to Aja's

Thanks!
