unreliable sectors

Hi, in softraid I received a warning about one of my disks about having 8 unreliable sectors. There aren’t any reallocated sectors though.

The disk details show:

reallocated sectors: 0

unreliable sectors: 8

i/o requests: 44,726,285

i/o errors: 0

Just wondering, if I use Softraid to validate the disk, would it reduce the unreliable sector count if the data can now be successfully read, and reallocate the sectors that need reallocation? I wasn’t sure if validation would address the issue, or if I need to move the data off the disk and certify the disk?

Creating a RAID 5 from external desktop USB 3 drives

Hi,

This mistake might have been silly, but I created a RAID 5 from three external 18TB Seagate drives.

The resulting drive is 36 TB, which I have partitioned 50/50 as general storage (mainly local cloud caches, movies, and music collection) and as a Time Machine backup.

Now, one of the drives is showing i/o errors, and I've been advised to replace it, but I'm not certain how to do that!

I bought a new drive, but I'm uncertain how to nominate this new drive as part of the RAID to replace the failing unit.

I guess there are a few questions:

Was this a dumb idea in the first place? Is the software only suitable for actual raid boxes?
Should I attempt to rebuild with the new drive or abandon this approach?

Hello tech brains trust,

My RAID5 was degraded and after removing the faulty disk, the RAID volume won't mount anymore.

I'm getting this error from macOS so I can't use or rebuild the volume.

What is the recommended solution?

Hello,

I reconnected an enclosure setup w/ an older verion of SoftRAID to my newer MBP and I get the SoftRAID Driver Error message.

The four disks are listed in DiskUtil but the 4TB partition ( `FA709C7E-65B1-4593-BFD5-E71D61DE9B02` ) doesn't mount.

Can I RESET Softraid warning in this case?

Short story: After Validating a 3 month old RAID with Softraid, we ran an old version of a ANOTHER diagnostic program that reported that every drive was bad and unrepairable. This now shows up RED in Softraid and all 8 drives are labeled "Data and Parity Disk failed." (Since running the other old diagnostic program). I'm very skeptical that there is actually a problem. We ran the Softraid VALIDATE again for 28 hours and Softraid shows all good. But I can't get the warnings to go away and the Rad warning dot. I'm willing to assume just in this case it's ok. Can I RESET the Softraid warning by re-installing Softraid?

Only one of my RAIDs won't mount

I have three RAID volumes formatted through SoftRAID. Today the striped volume stopped mounting. If I try to mount it, the status flickers briefly then goes back to "unmounted." It also doesn't show up in Disk Utility. The mirrored and RAID 1+0 volumes needed to be rebuilt last week. Afterwards I verified all three. But they all say "last validated: never." All three volumes are on eight hard drives spread across two ThunderBay enclosures. I believe the volumes were created in High Sierra, but I'm now using Ventura.

1) How do I get the unmounted RAID to mount?

2) What's the difference between verifying and validating. Assuming validating is a good thing, how do I do that?

Remove Missing Disks from a Volume Command

Setup:

- Ventura 1321, m1 mini

- Thunderbay 8&4, Softraid XT v701

After using the command to remove disks from both enclosures (Thunderbay 8 and 4), the "remove missing disks" command failed to remove the, "degraded..." warning from the volume tile, and presumably then, failed to reset the volume's list of secondary disks of both enclosures.

- Tried ejecting both raids > enclosure restart

Server died that runs the Softraid Software - how to get 12tb raid working on new server?

Hiya,

so i have a small mac mini server with an internal 500gb hdd that has been hosting a softraid 12tb raid 5 array, 3 x 4tb drives in a thunderbolt OWC external box for many years sucessfully.

Unfortunately during a power outage the mac MBR got broken and the server no longer boots, apple have failed to restore the MBR, so the question is how can i get the 12tb raid 5 softraid array back working on a new server? for the 2 scenarios below:-

1) if i cant recover the server HDD and any config files.

2) if i can get to access the server drive what should i be looking for to transfer to the new server?

and how can i get this array working again without losing the data thats on it.
