You have to make the test equivalent. Did you run the hardware RAID 0 test for "a couple hours" also?

Its very possible your drives slowed down as they heated up. But if you are going to compare two results, the test conditions must be identical]]></content:encoded>

Yesterday I took delivery of a new drive, an 8 TB LaCie 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3. I'm a big fan of Lloyd Chambers reviews and software tools, and so immediately ran a short interval of his DiskTester "Fill Volume" test, which is similar to your drive certification routine in SoftRAID. Running the drive as the default RAID 0, connected to my MacBook Pro 13” (2016) via the supplied Thunderbolt 3 cable, I got an average write speed of 414 MiB/sec.

Having done a little SoftRAID research prior to the drive’s arrival, I knew that there was a slightly convoluted process to give SoftRAID access to the LaCie drives:

So, as instructed, I used the LaCie software to change the configuration to JBOD, installed SoftRAID, and began the certification routine. I ran it for a few hours, and then stopped it, curious to compare access speed under SoftRAID. To my surprise, the average write speed had dropped to 262 MiB/sec. So my question is whether this appears to be expected behavior. Is this perhaps the price one pays for better monitoring and SMART status reporting? If so, it’s probably worth it for a RAID 0 drive, even if I do have a solid backup routine.
