kernel panics

I'm running into a problem with my Thunderbay TB 2 enclosure causing kernel panics when it is connected. Running Big Sur 11.4 and Softraid 6.0.5. Send you my report via the online portal but haven't received word back.

We were unable to capture the panic logs, can you try to save one and save it as .txt?

I wonder if your bad disk is causing this. You can use "Blink disk light" to identify the disk. Then unmount your voume, wait a minute until all lights stop flashing, then pull that disk out an inch. See if the panics are gone. It is possible a time out is causing the panics.

New crash report after another

kernel panic

Same thing has been happening to me for awhile. I upgraded my MacOS to 11.5 Big Sur beta but that didn't fix it. Averaging a kernel panic about 1-3x per day. Interestingly that number goes way up if Adobe Lightroom Classic is open and I'm hitting the Thunderbay a lot.

Each time it crashes I have to reinstall the SoftRaid driver to get the Thunderbay to mount again. It asks for a restart, which I can't do or otherwise I lose the drive again and the process would repeat itself.

Can you attach a crash log? (next panic, "report to Apple", "more info" and copy/paste the text in the next dialog box into text edit. Also save a SoftRAID Tech Support file. Put both up on the forum. thanks

I will try. It's been happening a lot when I'm away from my computer and I come back to a rebooted machine...and no Thunderbay mounted.  Any way to go into my machine to find old logs and send them?

Do you get a message that "your computer restarted from a problem..."?

then you can click report to Apple, more info, and copy/paste the dialog box text into text edit and attach it here. Its not only a little hard to find the logs, but there is a bug in macOS where they are saved with a bunch of junk characters in the files, so this is the best way to get it.

DId you attach a support file for me to look at?

@softraid-support. Got it. Giving me an "Error: Filetype not allowed" error when I try to upload my 6k .txt. file.

I'll just paste it below:

A watchdog timeout happens when the system takes too long to shut down. Generally this happens when there are lots of disks and as macOS flushes the disk cache one by one, not all at once, drives with large caches can take a long time and the system can hang at shutdown.

Attach a support file, so I can take a look at the disks you have connected.

But what's weird is I'm not trying to shut down. Does it say what is causing the shut down?

No, i only see the "watchdog" in the trace.

Here are a couple disucssions on the Apple forums on this issue (no SoftRAID involved) I am not sure what is causing this.

Ok, thank you. I'll check it out. Sorry if I attributed these problems to SoftRaid when the real issue laid elsewhere.

These issues are very complicated. Its still possible it is SoftRAID, but it appears to be the watchdog timer. If you check around, and learn anything post back. If you get any indications it is SoftRAID causing it, let us know also.
