The ! (is indeed red) means the limited SoftRAID driver that is bundled with macOS was installed, overwriting the installed driver. This should only happen with a macOS upgrade, not an incremental update, but it sometimes happens. This is a macOS thing, which was a long standing bug in 10.14-10.15. It was mostly fixed in Big Sur.

What you need to do is update the SoftRAID driver, and "Allow" OWC as an identified developer.

I probably shouldn't read old threads or scare myself but as I was exiting the Known Issues page I saw this, so now is as good a time as any to inquire. I get that red exclamation point on volumes created in SoftRAID that are mounted on a second computer that does not contain SoftRAID, and that computer still runs 10.15.7 Catalina. I first noticed it at least 6 months ago when offloading some footage from a portable SSD connected to a BlackMagic switcher. Then I kept noticing it with an Elite Pro and old (since discarded after failing to initialize) Seagate hub-powered drive. All containing volumes created in SoftRAID.

Perhaps a year ago, I had SoftRAID 6.2 on that second computer, in order to certify a 16TB disk that took a week to complete. After that week of certification though, I uninstalled SoftRAID and just looked to confirm this was so. The installer remains in my Downloads folder, and it looks likes some .plist/extraneous files I don't understand still show up in the Spotlight search (when I search SoftRAID), but the app is certainly gone.

I don't usually mount disk volumes on the second computer anyhow but do once in a while in order to shuttle Pro Tools files from one computer to the other computer for video editing. Any issue leaving it as-is with the red-exclamation point present?

There is something else going on, you should not have this multiple times. SoftRAID driver install is a couple files being copied into the System, then System Preferences has to "update the extensions cache". That in itself cannot damage your system. Its more likely, I would think, you have old extensions causing issues, that are not compatible with the current macOS. You can attach a support file and we can take a look.

Ran the upgrade to 6.2.1 yesterday on my MacOS 12.2.1 iMac - got to the part where I needed to grant access to the updated version in the Security & Privacy System Preference, went for the reboot and on reboot the progress bar got to about 50% and there it stayed for ages - rebooted again into Recovery mode, no joy same behaviour, rebooted into Internet Recovery - Disk First Aid couldn't repair my startup disk.

Reformatted, reinstalled MacOS, installed (not upgraded) SoftRAID and everything is fine now.

I know you work in the depths of the operating system but I have issues of one kind or another with almost every update, I'm thinking the best way forward would be to not upgrade but to uninstall SoftRAID first and install (not upgrade) the new version?

Apple has announced they are moving third party drivers into "user space" to address this, but there is not yet even a developer kit, so it may be a year or two away before this is completely resolved.

Did you have your home folder on your SoftRAID volume?

If so, the best advice is not have the Home folder there, but alias the largest folder, like Music/Video/Pictures. Then you do not have this issue.
