I tried using it last night. It will not let me "work" on it because it is in use. I assume it sees SofatRaid doing its thing and prevents it from giving up access. Also a bit disappointed Disk Warrior will not work on APFS disks, which is what most of my disks are, including the internal MAC HD.

Thanks, I will give its try. It has been years since I have even heard of Disk Warrior and my records show I owned it back in the days of version 4. I will comment back here on how it goes so hopefully it can help somebody else some day.

Short answer: use Disk Warrior.

When your system shuts down or restarts, MacOS closes the volume directory on all mounted volumes, then unmounts them. At startup, it checks to see if the volume was unmounted correctly. (called the dirty bit)

If MacOS detects there was an unclean mount/shutdown, it automatically runs a repair tool to fix the directory. If this tool fails, MacOS will attempt to mount the volume read only (to prevent further damage). Sometimes MacOS cannot mount the volume at all.

If there is a "Disk Identifier" in the expanded volumes tile (such as disk10) that tells you that the volume partition maps are OK, and if the volume can not not mount, then it is a because of a damaged HFS directory.

Since the built in MacOS repair tool failed to repair the volume, the volume will remain in this state until you repair the volume, or restore from backups.

There is only one repair tool for HFS volumes, Disk Warrior by alsoft.com. It is extremely good at doing this. Disk Warrior is an excellent application, has more than 25 years of success in repairing HFS directories (not APFS), but is a commercial paid application.

All other third party applications we have tested merely run a version of the Apple built in repair tool (called fsck) using the terminal.app. This almost never succeeds. So I do not recommend any other third party application besides Disk Warrior.

We find Disk Warrior works over 95% of the time to repair unmountable HFS volumes. Disk Warrior does not write to the volume until the very last step, so it is safe to run. You can use it on any HFS volumes, Apple, AppleRAID, or SoftRAID.

Here are instructions for using Disk Warrior:

Purchase Disk Warrior at alsoft.com
Download the DMG and copy the application to your Applications folder
Launch Disk Warrior.
It will have a pull down list of volumes it detects.
Select your SoftRAID volume. (If the directory is seriously damaged, the name may only show as "SoftRAID Media".)
Click "Rebuild.
It may take a while to go through scanning the volume, and creating a new directory. Just let it run.
When this is completed, Disk Warrior will put up a message that it has created a new directory. you will have two options: "Preview" and "Replace".
ALWAYS select preview.

Navigate through the dialog box to browse the structure and test some same files. . Do this by copying some files to any other volume, and open them.

If there is a rescued items folder, visually scan that and make sure all important files are present there, and also openable.

If there is a damaged items folder, those files are probably damaged, make sure they are not important, old versions or have backups.

When you are 100% satisfied, go back to Disk Warrior and click "Replace.
Disk Warrior will replace the damaged directory with the new one.

Note: Disk Warrior makes no changes to your volume, until you click "replace". So it is totally safe to scan your volume. But there is no undo, for "replace", which is why you should check manually, if there was serious damage to the directory.

I can only "read only" on mentioned RAID. If I do "get info" on the volume it says all can R&W, but if I do a "get info" on an enclosed folder it only shows read. Trying to change it says I do not have permission to do that, even though I am the admin. Running Disk Utility comes back with can not fix issue. Any suggestions?
