@osuman Some drives do this, if they have not spun down, it keeps the platter lubricated.

@softraid-support, thank you for the quick reply. The beep sound does seem more subtle when I just unplug the cable. Perhaps I can use this method from now on.

Is it normal for each of the drives to still make sounds as if the drives were getting accessed after they are unmounted? (each drive makes a single click every 5-8 seconds as if a file is getting accessed - but the green activity lights are not lit).

When you power off the enclosure, the drive heads "park". Could this be what you are hearing? Maybe one drive is very loud.
Pull all the drives but one, and power it off. See if you get the loud click/beep. (the beep is some kind of issue with either one drive or perhaps the enclosure,

Do you hear the "clunk" when you just unplug the cable?

Hello, I'm unable to power down the thunderbay 4 without the drives making a concerning clunk and beep. According to a previous post on this forum, I unmounted the drive and waited up to an hour before switching off the unit without any different outcome. After un-mounting, the 4 drives in the array still make the random access clicking sounds as if the array is still mounted. I've confirmed with disk utility that the array is un-mounted - what steps am I missing that would cause the array not to shut down properly without the awful sounds?
