Is anyone else seeing fairly dramatically reduced write performance on softRAID volumes under Tahoe? I have a few different RAID volumes set up - one 2TB RAID 0 in an original 4M2 enclosure, one 3TB RAID 4 in a TB3 Thunderbay Mini, and one 6TB RAID 5 Accelsior 4M2 in a Node Duo, and all are showing write performance 36-37% of previous benchmarks (that is, a reduction of 63-64%). Only the RAID 0 is cracking 500MB/s, with the other two around 400MB/s in Amorphous Disk Mark. The RAID 4 and RAID 5 volumes were both benchmarked at 1100MB/s a month ago, and the RAID 0 at 1400MB/s.

Was there a change in SoftRAID for Tahoe, or are you working around an Apple bug? It's weird that all of my softRAID volumes are so much slower, and by very similar amounts, while my one single drive working volume actually writes a bit faster under 26 than 15.x.

Hello SoftRAID Community,

I'm seeking assistance with an issue concerning my RAID 5 array managed by SoftRAID. My setup includes four 8TB drives configured in RAID 5. Recently, one of the drives began failing, prompting me to validate the array, which completed without errors. I have a replacement drive arriving soon.

However, last night, the RAID volume disappeared from the "My PC" section. SoftRAID still recognizes all four drives, and Disk Manager displays the RAID array as 22TB, though it lacked a drive letter. After assigning a drive letter, the volume appeared with 0 space, prompting a format request upon access, which I declined. SoftRAID now indicates the array as "21.8 TB - RAID 5 - (unknown format)."

Could the failing drive be causing this issue, despite RAID 5's tolerance for a single drive failure? Additionally, I would appreciate guidance on replacing the faulty drive upon its arrival, as the available tutorial doesn't align with my SoftRAID version.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Steps to reproduce:

Create a volume in SoftRAID (I'm using RAID 4, workstation, 16kb stripes on a Thunderblade x8 16TB)

Use the macOS Disk Utility to Erase the volume and Format it as APFS (Encrypted) with a password

Run a Verify operation on one or more disks

Expectation (with health disks): it passes.

Reality: it critically errors, then passes. If the volume isn't encrypted it works fine. I suspect that this has something to do with SoftRAID's inability to mount the volume after verification due to not having access to Keychain or store its own credentials because it happens immediately after it declares that it's mounting. At a minimum I think the error message should be adjusted to indicate an encryption-related issue rather than a disk in need of immediate replacement. I'd love to see full and proper encryption support within SoftRAID itself.
