From a user perspective, it should be straight-forward: associate each volume with a single bit internal flag that indicates whether the last unmount was automatic (0, initial value) or not (1, user request). Meanwhile, add a command line option to softraidtool volume unmount, something like "noautoremount" that tells the driver to set the flag. Have the GUI add the flag to commands it issues to the tool when the user requests unmount.

This should not take much change. The largest change would be adding the flag to the output when the user asks for info.

... Surely softraid already has reserved fields in the header that are extensive enough to accommodate one bit.

An example is when you are managing partitions and you need to create and remove more than one, having to wait each time for SoftRAID to unmount and remount volumes between each attempt is slow and time consuming, especially when you have several operations to do in a row.

If could be a simple prompt or checkbox when performing an operation to ask if the already unmount volumes and any new volume should be mount immediately.
