Optimization primarily sets up rebuilding strategies. With Stripe volumes, Optimization is "permanent" (it sets the Stripe unit size), with any other RAID type, you can change the settings at any time.

One main idea is that when you are editing video, you do not want any interruption of disk activity to your work. With servers, you want rebuilds to go as fast as the disks can accomplish the task.

Optimizations can be changed at any time, even during a rebuild of validate.

And, any time you are not touching the computer for a period of time, all optimizations rebuild at server mode until you return to the machine.

I’ve read the user manual info regarding this but are there any negative consequences for selecting the wrong type? For example I’m setting up a bunch of drives for archival purposes that will contain mostly video files. I selected video but let’s say down the road the drive gets re-purposed to contain different types of files will I run in to any issues? Obviously I could format and create a different kind of volume but let’s say for the sake of argument that I can’t do that.

To boil it down, is the optimization selection irrelevant for a simple backup drive and only beneficial for active “working” drives?

Also, if you’re prepping a drive to install OSX on I’m assuming Workstation would be the best choice, correct?

Thanks!
