And you can certainly move drives from one enclosure to another. I personally would go for the 8 bay, as it is less connectors. Having too many Thunderbolt enclosures in a chain is a problem on macs, maybe windows also, I don't have the experience.

I remember going to FireWire kitchens, where we could connect 20 FireWire devices together, and if the cables were high quality, it would work reliably. (slow, but reliable)

You cannot connect anywhere near that with Thunderbolt, with out devices hanging, ejecting, etc. So less is better.

Lets talk RAID 5 for now. It does not matter whether in one enclosure or two, as it will work the same. Clearly it is electrically simpler in one enclosure however.

If I have 2 Thunderbay 4's, can I run a RAID 6 across the 8 drives in the 2 bays? And is it more or less the same as having it across a single TB8 please, hardware failure risks excluded?
