Hi.
i have 2 Thunderbay 4s, one main with 12 TB backed up to the second with 24TB. Both are Thunderbolt 2, RAID 0. This setup has been working well for me.
My drives in the main raid (2 x 6TB WD Blacks) are from 2016 and both have around 3600 hours of use.
My back up raid are 4 x 6TB WD Red, also from 2916, with hours of use ranging from 370 to 6600. One was replaced in 2020.
I have decided that should a drive fail, I would transition to SSDs using the Thunderbays.
In order to keep costs down I would buy Samsung SSDs, either the EVO or the QVO type.

Can these drives be used in a RAID setup? Is there anything that I should be aware of?
Thanks!

Flash is still expensive, expect replacement drives to cost $100 a TB each.

I would keep one with HDD's and use one with flash, HDDs are louder but as a backup, excellent.

If you get large enough SSD's, you can replace them one by one, in your enclosure with no problem.

You can mix SSD's into a HDD mix with no issues.

THe one thing you need to do is make sure the Samsungs you purchase have MacOS compatible firmware (the newest models are usually not for several months or longer), and you must certify Samsung if you don't want any breaking in issues with them.

otherwise, no issues.

Sorry for the late answer. Problems logging in.

What would be the advantage of mixing SSDs and HDD?

Thanks, Alexandre

@thenightrunner

RAID 1+0 is the most common application to mix HDD and SSD, as SSD's would be the Primary disks (effectively an SSD stripe), and HDD's for mirror pair two. SoftRAID auto configures this if both are detected.

Otherwise, the HDD will be the performance limiter, and you won't get the benefit of faster SSD performance.
