I'm in Trial mode while I Certify a new 10T Seagate drive. I'm running macOS 10.14.6 (18G6020) and I have not rebooted since I installed SoftRAID lite. (I was never directed to.)
I installed it as a Standard user and I elevated to an Administrator user to install it into /Applications/.
It has crashed twice.
I fully plan to purchase once I get the disk Certified and the data copied to it.
Note, this is on a different system from the other posts I've made.
I just initialized the drive and have started a verify on it. I will report back in 12+ hours.
Also, the hardware involved: Mac Pro (late 2013) with 32GB RAM. TB2 enclosure from OWC.
Sorry for the application crash bug. It really only affects certify, which I can give a command line for, but it is annoying. The app is losing contact with the SoftRAID Monitor for some reason, and we have not identified the root cause yet.
Happens on Verify, too.
Seriously, there is no fix? That makes the product useless for me. Bummer.
I thought Lite didn't have a command line interface? At least, that's what it says here.
I don't need the full product on this system, and the email notification isn't working for me on that other machine, and I only need RAID 1 on this machine.
I have a feeling it's because I run as a Standard user and not an Administrative one. When I run the Lite version I get asked a lot to provide admin privs. Perhaps it's not elevating when it should and that's causing the crashes? I don't know if the priv elevation must be requested or if it is automatic.
I tried to ssh login to an account (`admin`) and start SoftRAID Lite from the command line, but I got following. What else can I try?
mack2:~ admin$ /Applications/SoftRAID\ Lite\ 5.8.4/SoftRAID\ Lite\ 5.8.4.app/Contents/MacOS/SoftRAID
_RegisterApplication(), FAILED TO establish the default connection to the WindowServer, _CGSDefaultConnection() is NULL.
2020-09-30 18:06:55.465 SoftRAID[2911:17445] +[NSXPCSharedListener endpointForReply:withListenerName:]: an error occurred while attempting to obtain endpoint for listener 'ClientCallsAuxiliary': Connection interrupted
Another clue is that the failure happens after some period of time. Like 20 minutes? I wonder if elevation of privs only lasts for some period of time, too, so that's why the app fails after a while?
I don't see SoftRAID in the Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access panel. Maybe that's because the app just talks to something else in the background and it doesn't need disk access.
Lots of comments.
Its also possible that there is a bug in running in non admin mode, we used to have issues in OSX, but I thought we flushed those out in the 10.4 days. SoftRAID should work in non admin mode just fine, as long as you give permissions.
Full Disk access is required however, so please add it. Else the application will have issues performing tasks, as the Application cannot talk to raw disks.
You can try the command line: softraidtool help and see if it works. We left some command line functions, even we state it is not available, its easier if some commands work.
20 minutes is a short time for the app to quit. Most users who see this, it takes at least a day or more to happen. I do not know what the trigger is, however.
OK, doing a certify via the command line interface now. Will report how that goes.
There is no feedback, except a command prompt when done, but it works. Certify does not use the SoftRAID driver.
Does the command line report errors if it finds any? If you need another developer to help work on this, please let me know. It is frustrating working with semi-working software especially when a process takes 4 days.
It reports errors, yes.
What expertise do you have? ;-) Yo can send info to support at SoftRaid
Doesn't use the SoftRAID driver? Why is that? That's part of what I want to test, that the driver is also working.
No, the certify command is actually a low level script. It cannot use the SoftRAID driver, because in OS X, the partition map on a drive determines which driver controls it. Since there is no partition map, only OS X's default driver can control a disk in certification.
Intertesting. What do you suggest that I do to test the SoftRAID driver before putting the disk into production?
