I was on 6.0.4 and upgraded to 6.0.5. It seemed to go successfully and I approved the kernel extension upgrade but before I could restart my Mac Pro crashed (black screen of death).
After it started up again my array now fails to mount.
Opening Softraid, I can see the array and the driver reports as 6.0.5.
Please advise.
I'd try to downgrade back to 6.0.4 but it doesn't let me (it should always allow downgrades btw unless there is a breaking change).
I'm running macOS 11.3.1 (Big Sur).
You can uninstall driver, then reinstall 6.0.4. Or you can run 6.0.4 and just "reinstall SoftRAID driver"
Did you "Allow" OWC as a Identified Developer?
Same problem here.
Running 6.0.4 and reinstalling driver via menu item "Volume > Reinstall SoftRAID Driver" did not result in ability to mount the array.
Uninstalling via "Utilities > Uninstall SoftRAID" and then running 6.0.4 to reinstall driver did result in success.
Did "allow" OWC during both methods.
Problem solved. I suppose I need to skip 6.0.5.
We have a bug report filed iwth Apple to help understand this issue. We did not make any changes in SoftRAID"s driver to make this version dependent. Something is going on in Big sur and it seems to be affecting a small percentage, but it is incredibly frustrating for users who have to become experts in managing extensions just to get their drivers installed.
Hi< I have the same issue. How do I revert to 6.0.4 for the time being. How do I uninstall softraid via utilities? Thanks.
@Joseph how do I uninstall sofraid via utilities please? all I know is to drag the app from the application folder to the trash. Thanks.
Got it! :)
For those reading this, you need to uninstall the SoftRAID driver, not the application, which is in the SoftRAID utilities menu.
Let me know if 6.0.4 makes a difference.
@softraid-support Yes thanks, I was trying to bin the app rather than doing it from softraid itself. I have now gone back to 6.0.4 and is working fine. Please let us know when 6.0.5 has been rectified. thanks.
This may be a 11.5 Big Sur fix, the driver loading mechanism appears to have multiple issues. We have a report in to Apple on this.
@softraid-support I am on 6.0.4 now but when I restarted today same problem happens. So tried to upgrade to 6.0.5 but still the same. Volume will not mount and no task can be performed to softraid volumes.
Are you able to manually load the driver by pasting this into the terminal.app?
sudo kmutil load -p /Library/Extensions/SoftRAID.kext
@softraid-support I am now able to run the 6.0.5 version. I uninstall the 6.0.4 via utilities. Restart the mac. Then with the thunderbay running installed the 6.0.5 version but before installing it made sure that it has full disk access in security and preference.
Now its working but Im still observing because I have not restarted the mac yet. The problem usually appears after a restart. May it be a 6.0.4 or 6.0.5 version of softraid.
I am thinking this is a Big Sur issue. too many users are having to manually load the driver. Hopefully we can figure out what is going on and either find a workaround, or get a fix done in 11.5 or so.
@softraid-support I was also unable to mount volumes in 6.0.5 on my MacBook Pro. Uninstall and reinstalling 6.04 was unsuccessful. OWC developer was approved. Uninstalled driver via SoftRaid application, restarted, then executed the following in terminal as described in earlier posts:
---
$ sudo kmutil clear-staging
clearing all staged extensions...
$ sudo kextcache -i /
Executing: /usr/bin/kmutil install --volume-root / --check-rebuild
rebuilding local auxiliary collection
kmutil done
$
---
On restart started the 6.0.4 SoftRaid application and went through the driver install and approved OWC again. Volumes where successfully mounted on subsequent restart.
